Restaurants & Food Outlets First Yusheng Lohei
The traditional Chinese New Year lohei using raw fi sh (yusheng) practised in many parts of the world started at the Cathay Restaurant in the 1960s. It is thought to be the creation of the four chefs at the restaurant – Sin Leong, Tham Yui Kai, Lau Yeok Pui and Hooi Kok Wai.
Oldest Chinese Restaurant
Spring Court Restaurant was started at the Great World Amusement Park, Kim Seng Road, in 1929. It is now located in a four-storey heritage building at Upper Cross Street. It has a number of VIP rooms with karaoke facilities.
First Revolving Restaurant
The Top of the ‘M’ on the 39th fl oor of the Meritus Mandarin Hotel, is the fi rst and highest revolving restaurant, opened in 1973. Situated 173m above the ground, it has a seat- ing capacity of 124 persons and takes about 2 hr 15 min to make a complete round, which the architects assume to be the duration of a full-course dinner.

Largest Chinese Seafood Restaurant Chain
The Jumbo seafood restaurant group was established in 1987 with its fi rst restaurant at the East Coast Seafood Centre. It has now grown into a group of seven restaurants serv- ing live seafood prepared in familiar local and Hong Kong styles.

Most Expensive Peng Choy
Tam Kah Shark’s Fin Restaurant created the traditional dish using S$5,000 worth of ingredients on 19 Jan 2007. The Peng Choy is normally associated with the Chinese New Year or other large-scale celebration.

Crystal Jade started its fi rst restaurant at Cairnhill Hotel in 1991. It has grown beyond Singapore with restaurants in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, Seoul, Jakarta and Tokyo. Currently, it has 37 restaurants throughout Singapore.

In 2009, Iggy’s was ranked 45th in the World’s Top 100 Restaurants by the pres- tigious British magazine Restaurant, published by William Reed
Publishing.The annual list was put together by an international panel of 560 food enthusiasts including nine Singaporeans. The restaurant at The Regent Singapore debuted on the list at number 98 in 2006.
In 2000, the fi rst Prima Taste restaurant serv- ing Singapore food opened in Centrepoint. In 2003, the fi rst Prima Taste restaurant outside Singapore opened in Jakarta. Other cities fol- lowed: Manila, Sydney, Perth, Taipei, Shanghai and San Jose.

Somerset’s Bar at Swissotel The Stamford was named after writer Somerset Maugham. It claims to have the longest bar in Singapore, with more than 150 varieties of liquor on display.
Oldest Surviving Restaurant
Tiffi n Room at Raffl es Hotel, originally founded by Tigran Sarkies in the early 1890s to provide light mid-day meals, is the oldest restaurant.
Largest Steak Restaurant Chain
Aston Soon turned a kopitiam stall selling value-for-money steaks into a 15-outlet chain with an annual turnover of S$12 million in four short years. The chain comprises Aston Specialities, Aston Express and Aston Prime.
Biggest Revolving Restaurant
The Prima Tower Revolving Restaurant was opened in 1977. It has an area of 971 sq m and a seating capacity of 400 people.
Established in 1999, Paulaner Brauhaus is lo- cated in a unique three-storey glass building at Millenia Walk. It houses a micro- brewery follow- ing the brewing tradition issued in Bavaria by Duke Wilhelm in 1516.

PastaMania, with 23 outlets, is the
largest Italian restaurant chain in Singapore. It is also the fi rst to incorporate an innovative concept in its restaurants combining sit-in dining comfort with the fast food style of ordering food. It was named Franchisor of the Year 2007.
Largest Donut Chain
Donut Empire has 11 outlets all over Singapore off ering a wide variety of freshly-made egg- free donuts. The halal-certifi ed donuts come in exceptionally delicate and creative designs. It opened its fi rst outlet at Tanjong Katong Road in 2007.
