BEST BET: Folk DAN HICKS AND

THE HOT LICKS Saugatuck Center for the Arts June 4, 8 p.m., $35 sc4a.org, (269) 857-2399

1960S SAN FRANCISCO IS where it all began for Dan Hicks. In the era of peace, love, drugs and music, an American music legend was born. That’s when Hicks started Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks – a funky, hippy, swing-folk band known for its goofy stage antics, then-unheard-of style and hits such as “I Scare Myself,” “I Feel Like Singing” and “Canned Music.” After the band’s breakup in 1973, Hicks continued producing music for television,

movies. He also formed another band called The Acoustic Warriors. To the joy of Hixsters everywhere, Hicks was back to his old ways again in 2000. With a slight change of name from His Hot Licks to The Hot Licks and a lineup change, Hicks released Beatin’ The Heat and started touring with the Lickettes. At shows, the band plays new and old Licks tunes. Even at 69, Hicks has still got it as he busts out those classic dance moves and continues to entertain and please with his dry banter. Some might argue that his voice is sounding even better these days, after taking some Jazz vocal lessons about 10 years back. Reported by Scotty Vernon
