BUDDY GUY Frederik Meijer Gardens, Grand Rapids June 23, 7 p.m. $45-$47 meijergardens.org, (616) 957-1580

ON PAPER, BUDDY GUY IS musically impeccable. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 by blues legends Eric Clapton and B.B. King, both of whom have played with, and claim to have been musically influenced by Guy. Rolling Stone placed him as number 30 in its list of “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” (between Ron Asheton of the Stooges and surf guitarist Dick Dale). He has collaborated with the likes of Otis

Rush, Muddy Waters and (more recently) Carlos Santana. On the stage, though, his credentials become obsolete, and the music speaks for itself. As he plays blues favorites like “Sweet Home Chicago” and “I Can’t Quit You Babe,” his guitar solos drip of quintessential Midwestern Blues riff and his slightly-improvised lyrics act as humorous interludes during the musically-driven songs. He is the ideal of a professional musician, but he is also an absolute artist. His licks are original, though oft-mimicked. Those searching for a classic Chicago Blues experience with an iconic guitarist will find Buddy Guy at his blues club, Buddy Guy’s Legends, every January, or closer to home, at Frederik Meijer Gardens this June.
