Letter from the Editor

It’s an interesting time for film in Michigan. For a while, business was booming. That was until Governor Nerd bombarded the Capitol and dramatically cut our film incentives (what a fun stealer). This not only pissed off Mitch Albom and countless others, but it created a difficulty in getting more movies made in our mitten.

Though it’s tough seeing jobs in film move away from Michigan, it’s inspiring to see local talent step up in order to keep their passions going and still make opportunities available in local film.

One group of local talent is Compass Film Academy. In this time of setback, Compass is expanding with a move to the old UICA building, as well as incorporating more classes – including a summer camp – into its roster.

Also working hard to keep local film alive is cover guy Ryan Lieske and Collective Studios. What I’ve learned about the filmmakers at Collective is that they’re all about passion. They have other jobs in addition to their work with film and get very

little sleep in order to bring their creations to life. It’s paying off, too. As Lieske told us in this month’s Q&A, his film Clean Break was green-lit to become a full-length feature. We congratulate him on his hard work and success.

In other news, we are sad to say this will be the last Literary Life column from the wonderful Joanna Dykhuis. Joanna came to us a year and a half ago as a minion and worked hard at her minion-y duties in order to earn the title of Literary Life columnist. We’re going to miss her, but we can’t cry for long, however, because our recently-graduated all-star minion Meaghan Igel is following in Joanna’s footsteps and will be taking over her post as Literary Life writer. Meaghan’s been eyeing the column for months and we’re happy to have her on board.

Rock on.
