spotlight: staegar packaging The future’s bright
Staeger Clear Packaging set for growth with new premises and investment
The packaging industry is a demanding sector for SME (small medium enterprise) businesses. There are many companies who have started life full of optimism and great ambition, only to fail after the initial hopes and enthusiasm have waned. Success depends on many things but certainly good products and services, technical expertise, knowledge of the market and great people are vital ingredients.
T
hese are qualities which Staeger Clear Packaging has in abundance, as the recent move into new customised premises and the announcement of new investment
have both testified. Staeger`s story is one of a SME who succeeded in a recessionary climate and who is now poised for further growth. The company produces transparent cartons, lids and bases,
sleeves and tubes, with screen and litho printing capabilities. It became part of the Staeger Group of Switzerland in 2008 and immediately benefitted from the investment, technical skills and expertise which was made available from the new owners. Over the three years since the acquisition sales have grown by 35% and this in a period when the economic downturn has been at its worst. However despite its success and the winning of the
prestigious Company of the Year Award at the UK Packaging Awards in 2009, the management of Staeger Clear Packaging always knew that their future lay in moving to a new location. Ian Jamie, Managing Director of the company, takes up
the story:“Expansion at the old premises in Coventry was difficult. All the management team had ambitious plans to grow the business, but we were well aware of the limitations of the old site. I am pleased to say that these restrictions will no longer be an issue and we can plan with confidence for an exciting new future.” Staeger Clear Packaging`s new premises are at
Swallowgate Business Park, Coventry, across the city from the old location. The modern 24,000 sqft offices, production facilities and warehouse are ideally situated near to the country`s motorway network. Plans are already advanced for investment in new equipment. A new tube-making machine will shortly be
delivered, complementing the two already installed. Staeger already has an extensive portfolio of equipment including cutting and creasing, gluing, and hi-frequency welding machinery. Ian Jamie continues:“Our
main markets have always been in the food sector. We have BRC/IOP certification for food grade packaging and I believe our main thrust will therefore continue to be in these markets. However we have many customers in many other markets including household, gifts, personal care and the cut-flower sector. I believe we will be better equipped to deal with all their requirements at our new location. It will also be a pleasure to invite customers to our new premises, where they will be able to discuss new pack concepts and ideas with our sales and design studio teams. Personal contact is a great benefit when developing new ideas and this will be a win-win situation for all parties.” Staeger Clear Packaging
has always been an innovator in its use of new materials and processes. The company pioneered the use of recycled PET materials and has built up excellent relationships with many of the leading retailers in developing this market. This initiative has proved to be extremely successful and the RPET material, recyClear, is now available with 100% recycled content and in great demand. Of course, it is one thing to
move into customised new premises and another to make things happen once you are there. In this respect Staeger Clear Packaging are under no illusion. As Ian says: “It is a tough market out there and we know we will have to continue doing all the good things we have done before. However we are now raising our game to a higher level, with all the consequential challenges this will bring. The

packaging supply chain is always looking for innovation and I feel this requirement will perfectly suit our company. I have long believed that we had much more to offer our customers and now we have the opportunity to demonstrate this. The next phase of our development should be an exciting time.” Staeger Clear Packaging has previously
shown that it is more than capable of servicing the needs of retailers and leading consumer goods producers. With its new location and investment in new equipment, the company seems well positioned to further grow sales and meet customer requirements in an enhanced way.
