s the main season of shows for 2011 comes to an end, Packaging Gazette has a look back at the easyfairs, Pro2Pac and interpack exhibitions.
All the way back in February, Packaging Gazette visited the
NEC in Birmingham to walk around the four easyfairs shows: Packaging Innovations, Ecopack, Packtech and Contact Pack, and like a well-orchestrated quartet, they worked together to provide a symphony of new packaging ideas, solutions, machinery and products, covering topics such as sustainability, technology, contracting and innovation. Away from the exhibition floor, highlights included The Big Packaging Debate which saw some of the industry’s biggest players interrogated in a Question Time-style question and answer forum and The Lions’ Lair, a Dragon’s Den-like area where packaging entrepreneurs pitched their ideas to a panel of experts. On to March we went, and Packaging Gazette travelled to
the ExCeL in London to visit Pro2Pac. An impressive buzz was noted around the show, with exhibitors commenting on the quality of buyers who had visited. A number of interesting seminars took place, including Laurel Miller of a.m associates looking at convenience culture’s role in packaging and how it is having an effect on the environment. Particularly enjoyable was Louise Steven’s look at Innocent’s struggle as the drinks company strives for a 100% recycled content bottle. Finally, this month, Packaging Gazette boarded a plane and
flew all the way to Dussledorf to visit interpack, a show full of exciting activity with 2,700 exhibitors and 174,000 square metres of space. This year’s INNOVATIONSPARC PACKAGING concentrated on the theme of “Quality of Life”, which presented an all-embracing concept directed at the individual which correlates directly with consumer behaviour; something that is highly relevant to the packaging sector and both branded goods manufacturers and retailers. A place to be seen for those who specialise in FMCG packaging was the SAVE FOOD pavilion between halls 10 and 16. Here results from studies by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations regarding global food loss were released, giving some interesting insights. Associations such as the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) and the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO) made contributions to the pavilion, making it a worthwhile and useful tool. The Metal Packaging Plaza offered a useful and eye-catching space for those involved in metal packaging. Themes included sustainability, safety & security, convenience and innovation. Some 40 companies took part in the plaza, and it was supported by both the German Metal Packaging Association (VMV) and Empac, the European body which represents the interests of metal package manufacturers. PFM’s interpack success
Stand-up four-corner sealed bags with an additional pocket to hold promotional items or accessories can be made from a single web of film on the new Zenith Duo Bag machine, launched at interpack by Italian manufacturer PFM Packaging Machinery. Typical applications are snacks such as cheese and processed meat with their own cutlery and wipes, confectionery promotions with giveaways or toys and pasta with sachets of spices or flavouring. "The Duo Bag is the first stand-up two chamber bag, offering high on-shelf visibility and a whole range of merchandising opportunities in food, snacks and confectionery," points out PFM sales and operations director Chris Bolton. "The single web keeps cost to a minimum." The bag is based on PFM's established four corner seal Steelo bag but with a fifth panel created from the single web of film and sealed into place at the rear to form the pocket.
