Designing inside and out The Living In Space team creates eco-aware spaces for the interior and exterior

Living In Space have built up a credible reputation in the design and architecture industry for providing eco friendly solutions for any interior or exterior challenge long before it became fashionable. Sharing a passion for the environment, Director Anita Kohn and her business partner and son, Ryan Kohn, prefer to design and build in such a way as to not harm the environment or the people within it.

B

earing their green credentials in mind, every project is approached with an aesthetic

eye that is firmly placed on maximizing a property’s full eco potential. Seizing any opportunity to bring the best of the outdoors into your living space, according to Ryan “a vital ingredient in the creation of a space that feels connected with the outdoors is huge glass doors, preferably concertina so that they can be pushed right back, creating a smooth transition from indoors to outdoors. When the doors fully open the boundaries between the two spaces become indistinct, creating a huge living space that is flexible, and provides the best of what indoors/outdoors has to offer.” Whilst the great British weather is not always on our side to allow

proper outdoor living, altering your home to take advantage of its best nature inspired attributes allows you to make the most of your outside space by designing in conjunction with the property’s inside space. A seamless flow between the indoors and the outdoors also creates the sense of a bigger space than what is actually there. This blurring of boundaries is a request that Living In Space hears continually and is definitely on the increase. For this particular project, Living

In Space installed a built in seating area with an outdoor gel fire in the same linear white style as the interior architecture, which links the inside and outside spaces together, allowing you to view it as one large living space. When the weather allows, the client simply adds cushions and soft furnishings to the natural stone bench to achieve an outdoor living area. Living In Space used natural

timber at various points in the interior, from the rugged sculptural tree trunk storage pieces to the bespoke timber paneled front door. Anita explains, “in such a contemporary scheme it was important to use timber so that the inside space was visually connected with the outside, and so that natural materials were celebrated as much as man-made.” As always, Living In Space

encourages its clients to be mindful of eco issues and to opt for design solutions that have a smaller impact on the environment. With a scheme like this, installing a rainwater harvesting system to water the garden with is a must. Place the water butt somewhere discreet -or even choosing to make a feature of it. A two by one meter square plot is big enough for a little vegetable garden, cutting down on food miles and providing an enormous amount of pleasure and a feeling of achievement. Instead of an architectural awning or similar, grow plants and foliage over a timber framed structure for shade in the summer. Remember to make sure the foliage is deciduous so that the light still floods in during the winter. 
