Chandler City Hall is a finalist for the Urban Land Institute’s Award for Excellence. Twenty finalists were chosen from 148 entries from North and South America. The awards honor projects demonstrating creativity and best practices in land use and property development based on a review of the full project lifecycle from design and construction to marketing and management. The City Hall Complex, located at 175 S. Arizona Ave. in downtown Chandler, opened to the public in October 2010.

Chandler Police Department’s Forensic Services Section is the recipient of the ASCLD/LAB-International accreditation in the field of Forensic Science Testing. Accreditation is granted only after a thorough evaluation of the laboratory’s management system and technical procedures and practices. The Chandler PD is the first municipal agency in the state of Arizona to receive this type of accreditation.

The Bird Habitat Recognition Program at the Environmental Education Center in Chandler is the first municipally managed site in the Valley to be recognized with the Bird Habitat Recognition Award by Desert Rivers Audubon, a local chapter of the National Audubon Society. To receive the award, a site must be shown to provide food, shelter and water to birds, especially through the use of native plants in the landscape.

has been part of ICAN for the past 20 years; is past president of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; chair of the Chandler Ostrich Festival; a prior Chandler City Council member among other affiliations.

Lynda Exley, editor of the SanTan Sun News, recently won a top award in the 2011 Arizona Press Women’s Communications Contest. She took first place in the “Section Edited by Entrant, Non-Daily Newspaper” category for the newspaper’s SanTan Family Fun monthly pullout section. Judge’s comments were: “Thorough, relevant, timely stories. Well organized and edited.”

Barb Ciocchetti and Autumn Jones are the owners of the King and Queen Chihuahuas of 2011, Pepe and Chia, crowned as part of Chandler’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration and Chihuahua Races. Ted Becerra’s Chihuahua, Chico, is the 2011 Chihuahua Races winner. More than 80 Chihuahuas competed in the 14th annual Chihuahua races. This year’s festivities were produced by the Si Se Puede Foundation and hosted by the City of Chandler.

For the top dad selected by a SanTan Sun News panel, a photographer will take his photo, and his story will be included in the June 18 issue of the SanTan Sun News. The next top dads will have their nomination letters printed, and all dads nominated will get their names in the paper.
