18 May 21 - June 3, 2011 Sylvan seeks success stories

SanTan Sun area alumni are invited to share their stories of personal and professional success at the new “Sylvan Stars” website at www.SylvanStars.com. “It’s free, and it takes only a few minutes of time to share your story,” says Dr. Rick Bavaria, Sylvan’s senior vice president of education outreach. “If you’re a graduate of a Sylvan center who has gone on to success, we’d love to hear from you. Your story could make a real difference in the life of a struggling student in our community.”

Heeding hearing loss

May is “Better Speech and Hearing Month,” and Miracle-Ear in Chandler is working to educate SanTan Sun area residents on the causes, signs and treatment of hearing loss.

“Hearing loss can develop gradually, so people often don’t know what they’re missing,” explains Miracle-Ear audiologist Rebecca Younk. “That’s why we offer a free hearing test to everyone who walks into any of our stores. We know that identifying the problem is the first step in identifying a solution and returning an individual to a fuller enjoyment of life.”

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, hearing loss can result from over-exposure to noise, ear infections, some medications, certain diseases or even a head injury. Possible signs of hearing loss include difficulty hearing over a telephone, straining to follow conversations, trouble hearing over noisy backgrounds, dizziness and pain or ringing in the ears. Miracle-Ear also aims to educate the public about advances in hearing aid technology that have resulted in “smaller, less noticeable” devices. “Even the best hearing loss solution won’t work if a person won’t use it,” Younk points out.

To schedule a free hearing test or to learn more about hearing loss, visit www.miracle-ear.com, email bbaber@mehac.com or visit the Sears Hearing Aid Center at Chandler Fashion Mall, 3177 W. Chandler Blvd.
