Royal Burgh Standard Bearer 2011 Michael Craig
Michael, Born in Viewfield, Selkirk, in 1962. I lived in Bannerfield until the age of 8, when my family moved up to Dovecot but continued to attend Philiphaugh School until I went to Selkirk High School. I left school before sitting my highers, much to the dismay of my parents, to work on the shop floor at
R.P.Adam, where I was employed for 6 years before being made redundant. After a short spell in California, I returned and embarked
on a career with The Scottish Ambulance Service, training at Glasgow and returning to work in Hawick where I have been working as a front-line Paramedic since. I played rugby for Selkirk all my playing career, in over 100 games for the first team at scrum half before a knee injury finally took its toll. Horse riding was never a real option for me when playing rugby as I could only afford one or the other but after I gave up rugby, I was encouraged into the equestrian world by friend and Ex-Standard Bearer Stuart Coltherd. Shoved onto his Point-to-Pointer, “Murder Moss” I was given the advice, “Pull that yin tae gan left, that yin tae gan right, pull baith o’ them tae stop an’ kick it in the belly tae gan forrit. An’ mind, if ee fa’ off, it’s sair!” Needless to say, I did, and it was, but I’ve never looked back!
