Selkirk Royal and Ancient Burgh Ex-Standard Bearers Association this year celebrate
their
anniversary as an Association.
100 The
formation of the
association is
recorded as taking place on We d n e s d a y 17th may 1911. They were granted right
to take an official place in the Common Riding procession in May 1914. There is many mentions of them being in existence for a very long time before 1911. Indeed the list of Standard Bearers stretches back in to the mists of time. On the Night Afore the Morn members of the association gather in Selkirk High Street outside the old Institute and are
led by the Chairman,
Secretary and Treasurer to Fletchers Statue at the front of the Victoria hall’s where the Association Chairman lays
a wreath and the members of the Association then walk round the Statue in single file in order of the year they carried the Burgh Flag. This is a very poignant and moving moment for many Ex Standard Bearers. Indeed I am sure many will think of two stalwarts of the association Ian McCudden and Tom Kellet who have passed away in the last year, as they pass Fletcher’s Statue. The Association is actively trying to ensure the future of the Common riding with several initiatives such as the young riders’ scheme were the Association in partnership with a local riding school encourages youngsters who are eight year old to take up horse riding by providing some riding lessons.
