Incorporation of Hammermen At 330 years old the Incorporation of
Hammermen is one of the “youngest” crafts within the town, but our unbroken existence since gaining our Seal of Cause in 1681, is of great pride to all Hammermen. Made up of Joiners, Stonemasons,
Painters, Electricians, Engineers, Plumbers, Plasterers & Slaters, The Hammermen lead the procession “ower the Green” on Common Riding Morning. With a membership of around 150 the youngest 16 and the eldest in his eighties. There has always been a steady supply of applicants for that most sought after position, Hammermen Standard Bearer. Whilst our Common Riding duties are the most important in the Hammermen calendar, the members of the craft also help out at Scotts’ Selkirk and hold a very successful Burns Supper every January. Over the past ten years the Hammermen have sponsored two African children and raised thousands of pounds for local clubs, people and causes.
