Holiday camps Spring into action

By ALAN OLIVER

BADMINTONscotland’s holiday coaching programmes have proved to be incredibly successful over the years, with participants travelling from all over the country. This year’s spring camp was no exception, writes AlanOliver. For the first time BADMINTON-

scotland also held a Player Develop- mentWeek, designed for young players who are currently playing or aspiring to play in National competitions. The programme was performance

oriented and delivered by National Development Coach Diana Koleva, assisted by former internationalists Andy Bowman and Rita Yuan Gao.

The development week attracted

a good mix of players, some of whom were new to regular intensity train- ing. Also in attendance were some stronger more experienced players, including Under-12 National Squad players who were looking to improve their sharpness before the Junior Olve Jot competition in Antwerp. Both the Grimley twins,Matthew

and Christopher, won titles in Antwerp, so their hard work in training paid off. Players were en- gaged in practices that looked at various movement patterns, doubles rotation and skill development; all sessions incorporated match play and fun games.

NORTH LANARKSHIRE are once again leading the way with the BADMINTONscotland’s Youth Initia- tives and have already played host to the Bank of Scotland Sportshall Challenge in three venues across the region. In the coming weeks they will

be concluding their Sportshall programme by hosting their regional finals, as will the Aberdeenshire, East Lothian and Glasgow regions. Schools will be competing for a place in the Bank of Scotland National Sportshall Challenge Final at Bell’s Sports Centre Perth on June 1. Moray, Fife and East Ayrshire -

regular supporters of the Bank of Scotland Sportshall Challenge - will also once again have teams repre- senting the regions at the National Final in June. Moray hosted their local competi-

tion back in November where six schools took part withWest End

Primary the eventual winners. East Ayrshire have completed their Sportshall Challenge campaign where 16 schools took part and the winner was Nether Robertland Primary School. The Fife event was organised by

the students of Adam Smith College as part of their college course. Eight schools descended on the Fife Institute of Sport, where Collydean Primary School became regional champions and will now make their way to Perth to compete in the National Final. The Sportshall Challenge National

Final in June will be contested by schools from 12 regions across the country. In addition, schools from South Lanarkshire,West Lothian, South & North Ayrshire and Perth & Kinross will travel to Perth for what is sure to be an exciting day out and a tremendous finale to the 2011 Sportshall Challenge.
