St. Patrick’s School Holds Biggest Science Fair Yet
submitted by St. Patrick School St. Patrick School’s annual Science Fair took place on April 12 and 13. This year, the entire school, grades K-8, participated in the fair at various levels. Grades 2 through 8 where formally judged by outside judges, and the parents were able to view the projects and vote for their favorite’s Wednesday evening. Over 120 students presented at the science fair and they completed over 100 projects, making this year’s St. Patrick’s Science Fair the biggest fair yet. Employees of National Grid, Doble Engineering, Pelham Police Department, and Wrightenberry Mills, as well as teachers from Lowell (MA) Catholic High School judged student projects. Student projects were judged on their scientific approach, thoroughness, ingenuity,
creativity, and advancement of science. St. Patrick students chose a wide range of subjects that reflected the science course they were taking and their interests. The first-, second-, and third-place winners of the 2011 St. Patrick’s Science Fair were: Eighth grade: Shannon
Walsh – “Math and Mozart,” Shelagh Fitzgerald – “Hand-eye Coordination,” and Sara Belanger – “Juice vs. Sports Drinks.” Seventh-grade winners were Shawn McDermott - “Plant Pollution,” Ryan Ferrara – “Think Fast,” and Joshua McDowell – “Bacteria Breakout.” The sixth-grade

Detective Lieutenant Brian McCarthy of the Pelham Police Department, Pam McCarthy of Wrightenberry Mills, three electrical engineers from Doble Engineering Company – Leah Simmons, Jael Jose, and Matt Garber, and Bob Troup, a happily retired electronics engineer, evaluated the sixth- through eighth-grade projects. Paige Askins, a University of Massachusetts– Lowell student, judged the second- through fifth-grade projects. Principal Mr. Dumont, Mrs. Martin, Mr. Curfman, and Mrs. Ouellette worked very hard to make this a positive experience for all.

Outdoor Living, and First Aid. All the packs were initially judged on “Spirit” when entering a Station, how loud were they singing, and if they requested permission to enter the station before actually entering. Each station was manned by a District Boy Scout Troop and their Troop Leadership. The Boy Scouts gave the younger Cubs the opportunity to work as a unit to complete tasks and answer questions to the best of their ability. After completing each station, the Cubs received a score and earned wampum beads for knowledge, spirit, and respectfulness. The race was scheduled to conclude at 2 p.m. with the tallying of scores and announcement of the winners. Shortly after lunch, however, a storm cell, displaying impressive lightning, settled

Pack 610 participated in the Annual Chuck Wagon Derby at Camp Carpenter in Manchester. The derby, which was sponsored by the Nutfield District of the Daniel Webster Council of the Boy Scouts of America, began at 9 a.m. sharp after each of the 16 participating wagons was inspected for preparedness. Each covered wagon was then pushed/pulled by a team of eight Scouts, aged 7-13, from all den ranks. To complete the derby, the Scouts had to race their wagons to 10 different stations: Obstacle Course, BB Shoot, Knots, Craftsman, Citizenship, Cub Knowledge, Conservation, Personal Health/Safety,
