Hampstead Academy History of Hampstead Academy by Lyn Kutzelman – Founder


“It was 1977. It was my seventh year teaching Readiness/Grade One at the Atkinson Academy in Atkinson, NH. At that time, public kindergarten did not exist in New Hampshire and there was limited private kindergarten choice for parents. Encouraged by my colleagues, parents, and family, I decided to leave my secure teaching job and start my own kindergarten in Atkinson. At that time, my vision was simply to offer high-quality kindergarten for our community children. Looking back 34 years, I never imagined that vision would have become what it is today … a highly respected independent school for students in preschool through grade eight. Hampstead Academy evolved because of my dedicated staff, supportive parent community, and wonderful students.”

Hampstead Academy was founded 34 years ago with a passion for educating the whole child. While aspects of the school have changed over the years—the growth of enrollment, the school’s physical space, the integration of technology into the curriculum, the development of competitive sport programs at the Upper School level—the school’s driving philosophy remains the same. That passion for whole- child education that called Lyn to open the doors of the Atkinson Learning Center decades ago remains evidenced today by the dedication of Hampstead Academy’s staff and programming to offer the highest caliber of academic excellence while attending not only to the cognitive developmental needs of our students, but to their social, emotional, physical, and creative developmental needs as well.

We specialize in a variety of therapeutic massage techniques including Swedish, pre-natal, deep tissue, pre-and-post event, myofascial release, neuromuscular re- education and trigger-point.
