Chamber Recognizes Scholarship, Interview Challenge Winners
The Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce held a reception on Tuesday, May 10, at the Black Water Grill where scholarship and interview challenge winners were recognized. The scholarship winners win a $1,000
scholarship to either continue their education or to begin their education. The interview challenge winners have mock interviews at three different levels and they win prizes donated from local business. Scholarship Winners: Amy Desrosiers: I am a very busy student
and love to participate in community and school activities. Some of my athletic accomplishments include being a state champion discus thrower and holding the school record for the same event. I am also very passionate about theater and have participated in community, school, pre- professional, and professional productions around the area, most recently starring in Pippin at Salem High School and Schoolhouse Rock Live at the Palace Theatre. I am passionate about the Spanish language and culture and spent a month with a native family in Spain last summer. Next year I will attend the University of New Hampshire (UNH) as a Spanish and Musical Theater major. I want to thank the Chamber for awarding me this scholarship and helping me reach for the stars. Sarah Grrenlaw: I grew up in Salem where I spent my time playing softball and getting involved in various school activities, including National Honor Society, Key Club, and Health Occupations Students of America. I was an active member of Girl Scouts and earned my Gold Award through projects, which focused on promoting healthy habits and lifestyles among children. I graduated from Salem High School in 2005 and continued on to Villanova University for my undergraduate education. I was involved in many extracurricular activities while at Villanova, including many leadership roles within Pi Beta Phi, tutoring Philadelphia school children as a member of the Service Learning Community, and volunteering through Special Olympics. I graduated from Villanova in 2009, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and minors in Ethics and Theology & Religious Studies. I am currently a member of the class of 2013 at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. At Tufts, I have been able to get involved in my school and community through many positions and volunteer opportunities, such as Class Secretary, Community Outreach Chairs, and a founding member of the Tufts Chapter of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. As a dentist, I plan to use my knowledge and skills within the healthcare field in order to continue my volunteer work in the community. Matthew Brady: Currently a junior at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Mathematics (with a concentration in Statistics and Probability) and minoring in Business Administration. In 2008, Matthew graduated from Dracut (MA) High School with high honors, being in the top 10 of his class. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, and participated on the golf, basketball, and baseball teams.
