The Federation of Sports and Play Associations (FSPA)

The Federation of Sports and Play Associations, under which the API operates, is the national umbrella trade body rep- resenting 18 associations and over 400 member companies in the UK sport and play industries.

As Europe’s largest trade body, the Federation is known as the uniting voice of the UK sport and play industry and its mission is to work in partnership to represent and promote expertise on behalf of UK sports and play businesses. The FSPA membership base consists of UK manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors of sports and play equipment and apparel and includes a number of the countries leading brands. This membership base contribute a collective £3.1bn turnover to the UK economy and employ some 15,000 employees. The FSPA has official status as a lobbying organisation in the EU parliament in Brussels, enabling it to have greater power than any private business and as a not for profit trade body it works for the good of the industry as a whole rather than any single private interest. The API is the largest of the Federations associations, and API member companies

benefit from being members of the wider all encompassing FSPA umbrella body, as it provides broad representation and lobbying at UK and EU level, cross sector industry expertise, a cost saving membership benefits and services package, and opportunities and links to partner with government departments and national associations.

There is a great deal of cross sectional synergy and shared goals between associations operating under the FSPA umbrella, will the recent alliance of PAR; incorporating the API and SAFEA (FSPA members associations) and the RPII (an FSPA affiliate). Two other associations operating under the Federation umbrella; the Sports and Fitness Equipment Association (SAFEA) and the British Association of Seating Equipment Supplies (BASES) are also in synergy with the API as they too rely upon working within similar markets. 
