11-14 years Winner Fergus Gill (UK)
Sparrowhawk on the lookout Fergus is a keen photographer and last summer he built a hide in his back garden, to help him capture his winning image of a sparrowhawk. As one of the judges said, “It’s no chance shot. Rather it shows what you can achieve in your back garden with knowledge of your subject, planning, patience and an eye for composition.”

11-14 years Runner up
Jack Chapman (UK) London tern
Jack used his first SLR camera and his uncle’s lens to get his winning picture of a tern. He went out looking for good photographic opportunities on the River Lee Navigation Canal in London, and after watching the ducks and terns feed, found a good spot to capture the image as they crossed the
water. Jack said, “I caught this particular tern as it passed the reflection of a scarlet canal boat, its wings skimming the surface.”

15-17 years Runner up Mark Fernley (UK)
The yawn The lions in South Africa’s Madikwe Game Reserve had been resting most of the day, so it seemed appropriate to Mark that he should get a shot of them relaxing. For this intimate portrait Mark got within nine metres of the pride. The judges said. “This intriguing picture breaks all the rules of portrait photography, with an unusually tight crop, no eye contact and a huge ‘empty’ space on the right-hand side. But its uniqueness works incredibly well and makes a memorable image.”
