Our world P

hotographers from 78 countries sent in an amazing 32,000 photographs to be

judged in the various categories of the annual Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. These include things like animal behaviour, portraits, underwater, plants, urban and garden wildlife and endangered wildlife. But there’s one category of special

interest to AQUILA: The Shell Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Young photographers can enter their images in

one of three groups – 10 years and under, 11-14 years and 15-17 years. So here are the winners and runners up,

whose photographs will be on display at the Natural History Museum, alongside the best of the world’s amateur and professional photographers. The exhibition of over 100 winning and

commended images opens in London on Friday 26 October, and will be touring around the rest of the UK and also in Europe during 2008. Find out more at www.wildphotos.org.uk

10 years and under Winner Patrick Corning (UK)

Monkey moment While on holiday with his parents in Costa Rica, Patrick discovered that one of the best places to spot the local wildlife was his balcony. These three squirrel monkeys were among the regular visitors, and one day after feeding on the surrounding fruit trees, they stuck around and played. “I think it is cute how one of the monkeys is pulling another one’s ear,” said Patrick. “I remember thinking to the monkeys, ‘don’t move!’”

Thomas Godwin (UK) Puma up close

Tom discovered the elusive subject of his winning picture while

staying at a working ranch and nature lodge in Los Llanos, a central Venezuelan plain which is rich in wildlife. While out on a drive with his family, Tom spotted a young puma in a small tree and was able to capture an intimate portrait. “It’s so unusual to see a puma at

all,” said Tom, “let alone have him sit there calmly while I snapped away, rather than try to escape the attention he was getting.”
