seventy (70) patients were admitted, including twelve (12) to the Intensive Care Center. Another twenty‐seven patients were transferred to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Medical Center (UAB), and to the Children’s Hospital of Alabama. “I’m proud of the manner in which our team handled this crisis”. Commented Lee. “Every discipline, each team member went about their job exactly according to plan. Patient after patient was evaluated, treated, and moved to the appropriate depart‐ ment.” The process continued hours on end until each patient was properly cared for. By 5am the following morn‐ ing the Emergency Department at DCH was back to a normal operating state. Although not yet confirmed, it is believed this event was the largest scale, single ER, response in US history. “Our Trauma System worked as designed. I can’t say enough about the level of cooperation and support we received.” Said Lee. “The system worked the way it was designed to. The folks at Birmingham Regional Emergency Medical Services System (BREMSS) were remarkable. I called for some support, and within twenty minutes units from the City of Hoover were enroute to help transport patients to Birmingham.”
