Anchors Aweigh at Battleship Cove for Cub Scout Pack 263

Athens, Greece Welcomes Pelham High School Visitors

Windham Cub Scout Pack 263

submitted by Jim Curtin Windham’s Cub Scout Pack 263 had a sleepover at Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA. The Scouts got to visit and sleep on the USS Massachusetts Battleship that saw action as part of Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa during World War II. They slept and ate in the same conditions as sailors during the war. The Scouts toured the Destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., which saw action during the Korean War and participated in the

naval blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Scouts also used the periscope and sounded the diving alarm of the submarine USS Lionfish, which made patrols in the Pacific during World War II. The Scouts received lessons in knot tying, war stories from veterans who served on the ships, and learned a lot about our proud military and naval history of the United States. The ships also became a big, giant playground for boys and their imaginations.

Petition Made to Establish New District in Windham

by Barbara O’Brien Town Administrator David Sullivan informed selectmen that a citizen petition has been submitted by a group of residents living near Moeckel Pond off South Lowell Road in Windham to establish a separate district. Sullivan said the petition was signed by the required 10 registered voters who reside in that section of town. Sullivan said there is still the need to establish boundaries for the proposed Moeckel Pond Village District. A meeting to discuss the issue has been scheduled during the selectmen’s meeting on Monday, May 23. Although the meeting will be open to the public, only those who live in

the proposed district are actually allowed to participate in the discussion or to cast any votes pertaining to the issue. One resident, who asked not to be identified, said the purpose of the petition and the establishment of the new district involves salvaging the old dam located on Moeckel Pond. There are already two individual village districts established in Windham, the Cobbetts Pond Village District and, most recently, the creation of the Breezy Gale Village District, which was established in 2009. The Breezy Gale Village District is also located in the proximity of Cobbetts Pond.

10 travelers from Pelham High School. Greece stretched out a very personal and welcoming banner! The eight-day tour was hectic, awe- inspiring, and exciting. As expected, Greece highlights famous temples, philosophers, dramatists, and artists. The students discovered that its mythology also drives much of its history. The language barrier was never an issue because the locals on the mainland and on the three islands the students visited extended themselves with warm hospitality. The bottom line—the students learned much about Athens, Greece, and its surrounding areas. They had fun discovering temples like that of Poseidon and Delphi, and treasure the opportunity to visit their Grecian friends again.
