by Dr. Manuel J. Sousa, Orthodontist Did you know that orthodontic treatment not only provides a cosmetic benefit, but a healthy one as well? When aligned correctly, your teeth are less prone to decay and injury. Orthodontists nationwide encourage learning about the health benefits of straightening teeth and educating the public on how to find quality orthodontic care in their communities. Dr. Manuel Sousa of Salem Centre for Orthodontix in Salem has brought a revolutionary new technology to the area, which can drastically reduce the amount of time braces need to be worn.
According to Salem Centre for Orthodontix,
having your teeth straightened is not just about image. “The health benefits of straight teeth for both adults and children are tremendous. Straight teeth help us bite, chew, and speak effectively, and contribute to healthy teeth and gums. Poorly

by David Bloom, DMD, Master Dentist Let’s face it, headaches (chronic or migraines) are no fun and can be downright debilitating. I have seen too many people suffering (often daily) from them, coping by taking pain meds, muscle relaxants, or worse anti- depressants. If this speaks to you, the good news is that you can be treated easily, leaving behind the meds or the daily visit to the chiropractor. First, let’s look at the myth that “my headaches are genetic, something that I simply have to live with and can only be controlled with medication.” Truth is, your headaches are most likely muscle-related (85 percent of all headaches are) and caused by bruxing (clenching and grinding your teeth). You are probably unaware you do this. How does bruxing cause my headaches? When you bring your teeth together, certain muscles become active (actually, hyper- active), much like if you held out your arm straight for a period of time, the muscles would fatigue and hurt until you could rest it. This is the same principle for headache relief—calm the muscles and the pain stops. Proof of this comes from the latest finding by the FDA, where Botox Cosmetic (the injectable used cosmetically to smooth wrinkles in the upper face) has been approved for treatment of headaches because it relaxes the muscles in the temporal region.

aligned teeth can be a contributing factor in tooth decay, abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, and excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth,” says Dr. Sousa. Today, adults are keeping their teeth longer, but teeth and their supporting structures can change throughout life. It’s important for people who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth to get to the root of the problem and correct it rather than simply seek a “quick fix.” Cosmetic procedures and rapid results don’t always address underlying orthodontic problems, and that may compromise a patient’s health down the line. With the revolutionary Sure Smile technology
(
www.suresmile.com), Dr. Sousa can more readily diagnose and prescribe treatment more accurately and precisely. Patients can have their braces off in nearly half the time with quality results. For additional information or to schedule your free consultation, contact Dr. Sousa at 898-4722.
Addressing those Horrible Headaches Bruxing can be a stress behavior, due to an imbalance
in your bite, or completely involuntary (you may do this in your sleep, which is why you wake up with a headache). This is shocking news to most of my patients, yet I can tell easily by looking at your facial muscles (think of it like bodybuilding—work a muscle and it builds) and by wear patterns on your teeth. These are developments I look for in all initial exams in addition to the secondary signs of bruxing, such as TMJ pain, cracked or sore teeth, and gum recession. If this is you, there are several things we can do to get
you comfortable. If you brux in your sleep (thus can’t control the behavior), then I will make you a custom- fit bite splint/mandibular orthotic to wear when you sleep. This way, if you brux, you will not hype-activate the muscles because your bite splint allows your jaw to go back to its resting position and move freely without interlocking (unlike 99.9 percent of the nightguards made). If you brux due to an imbalance in your bite (many do, as it’s the body’s way of equalizing your bite), I will balance your bite by equilibrating, bringing your bite back into harmony. As life is busy enough (no room for downtime), properly diagnosing and treating your headaches is life-changing!
Wine Offers Beauty Benefits Beyond the Glass
A glass of wine at happy hour or during a romantic dinner has certain mood-lifting benefits—that’s long been known. But in recent years, more and more studies have shown that when wine grapes are crushed, more than meal-pairing magic happens.
Antioxidants in red wine do all kinds of help- ful things for the body—like protecting your heart and boosting “good” cholesterol levels. But it turns out that crushed grapes not only of- fer healthy benefits inside, but skin beautifying benefits outside. “Wine has high antioxidant levels due to the polyphenols included,” says Carolyn Wente, CEO of California’s Wente Vineyards, the country’s oldest, continuously operated family-owned win- ery. “A wine country secret is that those antioxi- dants act as protectors against skin deterioration, defending it against damage.” While the French were exploring the idea of “vinotherapy” a while ago, it’s now making head- lines across the world—and showing up in shops and spas closer to home. Profiles in media outlets like The Today Show and luxury publications like Departures magazine and
Spafinder.com are touting vinotherapy treatments like crushed-grape seed scrubs, soaks in cabernet wine baths and honey-wine wraps as the next great anti-aging spa solutions.
After a skin-abusing winter of dry air and cold winds, your skin could benefit from a sip of wine as much as you could. If you want to get in on the trend, there are plenty of ways to do so. And as word about vinotherapy spreads, cosmetic and skin care companies are now including crushed grapes, grape seeds and even grapevine stems in their offer- ings. Products like Tone Vino Moisture Body Wash with Crushed Grape and Shea Butter, make the vinotherapy trend more accessible. It offers the antioxidant power of crushed grapes, which leverages collagen-depleting free radicals—one of the major causes of signs of aging in your skin—right at home in your shower.
with your bubble bath. With healthy anti-aging, skin- smoothing and moisturizing properties, it’s no surprise that grape-based skin care is becoming the next big thing in the beauty world.
- ARA Content May is Stroke Awareness Month!
If you think someone is having a stroke, act FAST and do this simple test: Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one drift downward?
Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Are the words slurred? Is it repeated correctly?
Time: If the person shows any of these symptoms, time is important. Call 911 or get to the hospital FAST!

Top 10 Health Benefits For Straight Teeth: 1. Straight teeth help an individual to effectively bite, chew, and speak.
2. Straight teeth contribute to healthy teeth and gums.
3. Properly aligned teeth and jaws may alleviate or prevent physical health problems.
4. Straight teeth are less prone to decay and injury. Decay results when the bacteria in plaque (a colorless, sticky film composed of bacteria, food, and saliva) feed on carbohydrates (sugar and starch) we eat or drink to produce acids that can cause cavities. Plaque can also increase the risk for periodontal (gum) disease.
5. As for injuries to teeth, protruding upper teeth are more likely to be broken in an accident.
6. Untreated orthodontic problems may become worse. This can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, destruction of the bone that holds
teeth in place, and chewing and digestive difficulties.
7. Orthodontic problems can cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, or misalignment of the jaw joints, sometimes leading to chronic headaches or pain in the face or neck.
8. Treatment by an orthodontist to correct a problem early may be less costly than restorative dental care.
9. Teeth that work better also tend to look better. An attractive smile is a pleasant “side effect” of orthodontic treatment.
10. An attractive smile is a wonderful asset. It contributes to self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-image—important qualities at every age.
