by Marc Ayotte The Pelham High girls’ softball team improved their record to 3-7 on Monday, May 9, keeping their playoff hopes alive with a 3-2 road win against Sanborn Regional High School. Jordan Parece went the distance, scattering five hits in leveling her record at three wins and three losses. Currently sitting two positions out of a playoff position, Python coach Todd Lozeau is still very confident that his Lady Pythons can produce a late-season surge. Pelham has four of its remaining six games against teams who are currently below

the Pythons in the Division II standings. He is also hopeful that wins in those games will sneak his team into post season play, but acknowledges it won’t be easy. After two scoreless innings in the game at Sanborn, the Pythons broke into the scoring column by putting up a deuce in the top half of the third—keeping the 2-0 lead after three innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth, the Indians matched the Pythons’ two runs, tying the score. In the visitor’s half of the next inning, Pelham pushed what proved to be the winning run across the plate on a fielder’s choice groundout by Kathryn Mostone. Solid pitching by Parece shut down Sanborn in the last three innings. Although they were held scoreless after Pelham regained the lead, the Indians did threaten in each of the sixth and seventh innings, leaving runners on base in both innings. For the game, Sanborn stranded a total of 12 runners, including a pivotal unproductive third when the inning concluded with the bases full of Indians. Coach Lozeau attributed a “strong defensive performance” by his team in stranding the runners and escaping Kingston with the victory. Pelham only mustered six hits in the winning effort, but as Coach Lozeau recognized, “they were timely, timely hits.” Leading the Pythons at the plate were Hannah Paitchel, who went three for four with two runs scored, along with Kathryn Mostone, who went only one for three, but produced all three Pelham runs. Her two-RBI single in the third was key in giving the Pythons the early lead. Coach Lozeau, noting that his team had ‘it handed to them’ the last time they faced Sanborn in game three of the season at Pelham, vowed then that the outcome in the rematch would be different. In avenging the earlier loss to Sanborn, he noted that “nice, close-game wins builds confidence”—confidence the young Lady Pythons will undoubtedly continue to build upon for the remainder of the season. Three days earlier when Pelham hosted Hollis-Brookline, the

submitted by Lawrence Academy Lawrence Academy senior Andrew Cerretani received his second season of All-League honors from the Independent School League (ISL) as a forward on the Spartans’ hockey team. He served as a captain and was recognized as his team’s MVP. Described by Coach Kevin Potter as “strong, fast, physical, and highly skilled,” he was the Spartans’ top scorer, with 21 goals and 29 assists in 31 games, and the second leading scorer in the ISL Keller league, with 25 points in 14 league games. Andrew’s team completed the season with a 22-8 record overall and the second best record, 10-4, in the ISL Keller Division. Seeded fourth in the NEPSAC Elite 8 tournament, the Spartans beat Avon Old Farms, 2-1, in the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual champions from Milton Academy in the semifinals, 2-5. The team earned the championship title in the 37th annual Lawrence Academy/Groton School Holiday Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Cushing Academy in the finals. Python Hannah Paitchell hits a frozen-rope single to left field in a game vs. Hollis-Brookline played in Pelham
outcome was disappointing, to say the least—something to build upon, shall we say. The Cavaliers came to Pelham riding a three- game win streak, which they quickly upped to four in convincing fashion with a 16-3 drubbing over the host Pythons. In a mercy rule- abbreviated matinee, Hollis-Brookline scored three runs in the first, six in the second, and four in the third, with Pelham answering only with three of their own in the home half of the second. In being philosophical about the outcome, Coach Lozeau realized that there are going to be ups and downs and one especially has to prepare for that scenario occurring with such a young team. Jordan Parece got the starting nod, but went only 2.1 innings, yielding to teammate Hannah Schaeffer in relief, who pitched the rest of the game. Considering the Pythons were completely outslugged at the plate, there were four Pelham players with noteworthy offensive showings. Parece had a nice day, going three for three with one run batted in. Hannah Paitchel was two for two with a run scored, while Elissa Moguaro went one for three, driving in the other two Python runs. Amanda Blake went one for two with a run scored in the loss.
