First Mom2Mom Yard Sale a Success School News Moms check out the sale items

by Robyn Hatch The Fisk Elementary School recently held the first Mom2Mom Yard Sale for all area residents to attend and shop for toys, books, clothing, and all child-related items. Sponsored by the PTA, admission to the sale was free and many parents were also able to watch the baseball game sponsored by the Salem Rec Department happening at the same time. The sale is an event that will hopefully happen for many more years to come.

Hampstead Academy Upper School Holds Eco-Fair in Celebration of Earth Day

School News Barron

submitted by Barron School Greetings from Barron School’s fifth grade. We

would like to share some notes on what has been going on in our fifth-grade classrooms. Ms. Bateson’s class is involved in researching an insect report. I hope you were able to see the process that the students are taught by Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Waterman from Media. It is a great way to take notes as you read, and then put together a report. The students are given a folder and they write note cards. Examples of these were on the board at Salute to Excellence in room 17. Ms. Austin had the students create their insect in art class, a very fun project. Ms. Bateson’s class is also reading There’s an Owl in the Shower by Jean Craighead George. Students in the other two classes will be reading the book as well. There is a special activity planned at the end. Ask questions when you hear the excitement ... I am not spoiling any surprises here!

Unit 7 in math has introduced students to positive and negative numbers. If students have bank accounts, this might be a good time to introduce the ledger book! Have them start adding and subtracting funds and looking over their “account balance.” The real thing might be more exciting than paper squares colored in red and black! With our Social Studies unit

on the American Revolution, students are learning how America came to be. We are learning that revolution means change, and that change united the colonists in forming a sense of pride in whom they were and what they had accomplished on their own across an ocean from their Mother country. This time was also the beginning of our government. Students have been comparing our world with the world of yesterday. Matter is the current topic in

our science classes. Matter is not an easy concept to learn, but the many labs with clay, water, spaghetti, marshmallows, and Alka-Seltzer tablets have certainly made it more interesting and fun! Watch your calendar! Our field trip to Lexington and Concord is May 17, and the band concert is on the horizon as well. June 7 is move-up day, too. On June 8, we have our field day outside; hopefully, it will be a gorgeous, blue day. On June 13, fifth graders will get together to celebrate their elementary years. Moving on to Woodbury is bittersweet ... looking to the future as you say goodbye to your past. The end of the year fast approaches, but we are busy beavers!

worked hard on their Eco-School project in preparation for Earth Day 2011 on Friday, April 22. Students in grades six and seven participated in the project, which is an internationally acclaimed program. Begun in 1994 by the Foundation for Environmental Education, the Eco-School program has been identified as a model initiative for Education for Sustainable Development by the United Nations Environment Program.

Hampstead Academy’s Upper School students became the first students in New Hampshire to register their school as an Eco-School through the National Wildlife Federation last fall. As

a student-led project, the students make all decisions regarding the project themselves. They have conducted an environmental audit on the school and have created an action plan to address the issues they believe the school community can improve upon. On Earth Day, they hosted an Eco-Fair in their school gymnasium, including planned educational games and activities for Hampstead Academy students in kindergarten through grade five designed to inform students of the actions being taken by their Eco-Action Team (the team made up of students, school faculty, and community members). The Upper School students of Hampstead Academy wish you a very happy, very green Earth Day 2011!

Now is Your Chance to Honor a Friend or Colleague

Most business owners expect to work long hours and make many sacrifices in order to see their companies and employees grow. Individuals who embrace work in non-profit agencies and charitable organizations very often place the mission before their own comfort. None of them do it for recognition or praise – they do it because of who they are. They are your neighbors, friends, business associates and family members.

Nominate someone you know for the 2011 Celebration of Excellence – there are few programs that are more rewarding in business today!”
