2008Rincon Classic: 25th A

Chris Keet

s I began working on the 25th anniversary Rincon Classic program introduction, I found myself pondering exactly what made something into a classic. Was it the look or feel, whether or not it could withstand the tests of time, the location, or maybe the people involved that made it so. A classic wasn’t something that could be called so from the get go, or could it?

Looking to the Websters New World Dictionary I found several defi nitions that seemed to match up as perfectly as the Indicator to the cove, the cobblestones to the sea, and the locals to her shoreline. Defi nitions; being an excellent model of its kind. A famous tradition, a literary or artistic work of the highest excellence.

Roger Nance, Jeff White and the founders of the original Rincon Classic

matched the concepts of both parts of the name perfectly back in 1979, taking what could have become just another surf contest and turning it into a legend. Year after year the event has maintained its integrity serving as a gathering place for those that have shared in her liquid perfection and called the sur- rounding communities their homes.

Roger and the Surf-n-Wear crew created the tradition, and brought the com- munity together for 17 consecutive years before laying the Classic down to rest. It is with great honor for Surf Happens to be continuing the legacy of the Rincon Classic for the eighth consecutive year. The support of our amazing staff, the local community, peers and mentors, and all of our sponsors is what makes the event possible.
