Local surfers riP their way to a new year:
NSSA GOLDCOAST EXPLORER DOUBLE HEADER AT “THE PIPE” Chris Keet
T
he NSSA Gold Coast wrapped up 2007 with a double header at “The Pipe” in Ventura on December 22 and 23. The crew on hand was festive as the fun waist to chest high waves kept the Christmas spirit alive. Contestants battled it out in nine divisions for valuable mid-season ratings points and to bring home some gold to stuff their stockings with.
Local surfers continue to dismantle the competition with multiple victories and top showings for area residents. Taking home victories from the Gold Coast this weekend was Montecito’s Parker Coffi n (Menehune); Gabe Biancone (Longboard); Kokoro Tomatsuri (Men’s); Chris Keet (Masters); Yari Vodraska (Seniors’); and the standout of the event with four victories was Lakey Peterson (Women’s, Girl’s).
Peterson, 13, from Montecito has been a force to be reckoned in the Girl’s division for several years, but truly made a statement by winning back-to-back Girl’s and Women’s titles at the Pipe. Her fl uid, radical style and excellent wave selection enabled her to over take local favorites Sage Erikson and Demi Boelsterli enroute to victory in the Women’s division. Back-to-back wins in Ventura also gave Peterson enough points to take the ratings leads heading in to the fi nal leg of the season.
In the Girl’s division Lakey continued her winning streak earning her fourth and fi fth victories in the ‘07-‘08 season. Ventura’s Catherine Clark put forth a strong challenge and surfed with a silky-smooth style and vertical off the lips to slide into second place.
On the out of town front, Nat Young continued his rampage as he took home three of four divisional titles in the Men’s and Junior’s divisons. Young, from Santa Cruz, was sizzling hot throughout the duration of the event posting several perfect 10s. The speed and power that Young can put into the tiniest waves left his opponents fi ghting for 2nd through 6th place fi nishes.
Congratulations go out to all local winners and fi nalists for their outstanding perfor- mances. (See results at right.) The next series of events will be held on February 16 and 17 at Campus Point in Goleta.
