Community Sister City title added to City signs

New signage now refl ects the designation that Chandler is now part of the International Sister Cities program. Chandler All-America City signs have been modifi ed in six locations to include “Sister City, Tullemore, Ireland” as well as the new Centennial logo.

“What a wonderful surprise!” exclaims Ellen Harrington, chair of the Chandler Irish Cultural Council (CICC), the local Sister Cities organization, who thanks the City for promoting their association with the Irish community. “These signs are a real symbol of our Sister City connection with Tullamore, Ireland.”

According to Tourism Development Coordinator Kimberly Janes, the signs may be seen at the southbound Airport Boulevard, south of Germann and northbound Airport Boulevard at Queen Creek Road, adjacent to the existing Airport monument sign; southbound Dobson Road, south of the Western Canal; southbound Alma School Road, south of the Western Canal; southbound Arizona Avenue, south of the Western Canal; and northbound Arizona Avenue, north of Riggs Road.

A new Family Resource Center is now open at the Chandler Christian Community Center (CCCC), thanks in part to funding from First Things First. After 45 years of providing a food bank for area families, CCCC is expanding to “meet the extended needs of families in the areas of early childhood literacy, health, parenting and others.” Lori Tapia is the Family Resource Center coordinator.

A recent open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny and Vice Mayor Trinity Donovan, who is also executive director of the Center.

CCCC is located at 345 S. California St. in Chandler. Tapia can be reached at 480-963-1423; for more details, visit www.chandlerfoodbank.org.

With the recent increase in foreclosed properties, many Chandler neighborhoods are struggling to stabilize property values and maintain proper landscaping standards, says Councilmember Kevin Hartke. For Our City–Chandler and the City of Chandler’s Neighborhood Resources Division are asking community members to help identify properties with overgrown weeds and make arrangements to pull them out.

Occupants of properties with weeds should be

notifi ed and should grant permission prior to any work. For vacant properties with weeds, the listed real estate agent, bank, property management company or owner on record with the Maricopa County Assessor’s Offi ce should be contacted to obtain permission to remove weeds. Homeowner associations should also be contacted in advance, if applicable.

For Our City–Chandler matches volunteers with service opportunities and posts announcements, needs and success stories online in an effort to share resources, engage in dialogue and serve together to address the greatest needs of the community. For more information, visit www.forourcity.org/ Chandler.html. Individuals or groups interested in taking an active role in the project can register with Neighborhood Program Coordinator Judy Ramos by calling 480-782-4348 or emailing judy.ramos@chandleraz.gov.
