Save the date – Santan’s eighth-grade semi-formal dance, “Movin’ On Up,” is 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sat., May 14. Tickets cost $10 each. Permission slips and ticket money should be turned in to the front office. The event will feature a deejay, prizes, food and a special appearance by RadioDriveBy. Music notes - The Santan Junior High Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Barbara Burkhart, was invited to perform at the Heritage Music Festival of Gold, a national invitational festival, in Chicago. Santan was the only junior high orchestra to perform at the festival and received a Gold Award for its performance. Yingyu Sun, a student at Santan, was chosen by audition to perform in the Honor Orchestra that performed at the event’s Encore Concert. —Peg Newendyke, Barbara Burkhart


Youth Hamilton High Huskies Payne Junior High Panthers


Booster meeting – The last Payne Booster Club meeting is at 4 p.m. Thu., May 12 in the Media Center to welcome the new board for the upcoming year. Smart students – Payne’s Knowledge Bowl team finished second in Arizona in the middle school category of the Knowledge Master Open. Also, five students scored perfectly on the Explore ACT test taken by eighth-graders: Austin Garrett, Caiden Gledhill, Colston Merrell, Cammi Roberts and Sebastian Scouras.


Mother’s day – Six girls were selected for the ASU Hispanic Mother-Daughter program: Maria Amador, Ana Camou, Sienna Carbajal, Nicole Collazo, Morgan Soto and Scarlett VanDamme. Calendar

Golf tourney – The 13th Annual Hamilton High School Golf Team Tournament, the annual fundraiser for Hamilton’s boys’ and girls’ golf programs, is Sat., May 14 at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler. Check- in begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the shotgun start at 1:30 p.m., dinner and awards. Cost is $110 per player, including green fees, golf cart, range balls and dinner. Making a racket – The Hamilton High boys’ tennis team made it to the final four of the 5A State Tennis Tournament for the first time in the school’s 12-year history. Music notes – The Hamilton High School Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Frank Dubuy was invited to perform at the Heritage Music Festival of Gold, a national invitational festival in Chicago. Horizon Eagles


Art show – Horizon’s Spring High School Art Show and Guitar Showcase is at 6 p.m. Thu., May 19. Beginning art, intermediate and honors art students and graphic design, photography and guitar classes will show off their work. The event also showcases Horizon’s first poetry expo, the Video Club’s latest projects and the culinary class will provide treats. Seniors celebrate – The Senior Luncheon is held 12:30 p.m. Fri., May 20 in the Community Room. Seniors will share lunch as a group to celebrate their accomplishments and upcoming graduation with their friends in the Horizon Honors Class of 2011. —Melissa Hartley


Willis Firebirds


Big winners – Willis had seven students with five projects enter the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair. Four of the projects took first place in their categories and one took second place. Awards were given to Tim Miller, first place in Chemistry, Naval Research Award, Air Force Science Award; Garrett Hable, first place in Physics and Astronomy; Tristan Phillips, second place in Physics and Astronomy; Jaron Mason and Jacob Uhl, first place Behavior and Social Sciences, $500 Scholarship Award and $50 each for Grand Student Award; and Tanzil Chowdhury and Danny Richardson, first place in Environmental Sciences. Willis was named the Junior High School Champions for 2011, the top in the state, for the second consecutive year. Jason Prichard won the Teacher Grand Award for the Junior High Division. —Paul Bollard


Seton High Sentinels


Easter surprise – Seton Catholic High filled area Catholic elementary schools with almost 300 Easter baskets in its annual Easter Basket Drive. Seton students annually collect food, Easter candy and toys to create wrapped Easter baskets for children and families served by St. Agnes School and St. Matthew School, both in downtown Phoenix. The junior class brought in the most baskets to donate this year and as a reward will be treated to lunch by Chandler restaurant Firehouse Subs. —Cindy Gould
