TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones
Much more now than ever before, there are programs that latch themselves on to the program you actually intended to download. There are so many programs that need updating as well these days that very
quickly you could have several programs that you really do not need. Always look for boxes to untick is my advice and especially if it is something like registry mechanic or the Elf toolbar.
If you are a Tiscali or Talktalk broadband customer, forgetting your Broadband username or password is an issue that can be quickly solved as there is an automated telephone retrieval service to help you. Unfortunately, the automated female cannot say the word hyphen or underscore. So if your username contains any character out of the ordinary, you just will not be told and you will keep trying to connect with the wrong credentials. So not much of a helpline really.
If you do feel it is time for you to tidy up your computer and you do not think the tools that came with it are enough, then our advice would be to look for Piriform cleaner. It is a program that we regularly use
on Vista & 7 machines. Beware though, that ticking some of the boxes can result in unnecessary damage. We do offer a visiting tidy up service where we can also answer as many questions as you like in the hour that it takes.
Whilst it is great that Microsoft allow you to activate Office 2010 in “Starter Edition” if it came pre-loaded on your computer, it will not allow you to do it again. So if your computer has to be re-loaded because of a problem, it will come back without the Office package because unfortunately, we do not have the resources of Compaq or Acer. So, you may end up having to buy Office after all. If you already have Office, make sure you keep it safe for such eventualities.
Many of you are new to computers because the world is rapidly becoming the sort of place where you are obliged to have one. If this applies to you, then one way of learning on your machine in your home would to be take
advantage of our visiting teaching service. Carol is not a technician, but is a capable user who can do all the things you are likely to want to learn. She is also nearly half the price of having one of the “Tims”.
