having started as two table top stalls in front of the Queen’s Head public house in Albaston with the aim of raising funds for the local children’s playgroup. Since then the fete has grown in size beyond the imagining of the original organisers and over the past 25 years has raised over £53,000 for local community groups and charitable causes. Amongst the many beneficiaries have been local schools, scout groups and cricket clubs as well as Children’s Hospice South West, the Primrose Appeal and Talking Books for the Blind. The beneficiaries this year are Harrowbarrow & Metherell Preschool Playgroup, Callington Community Gospel Choir, Albaston Knit & Natter Group, Plymouth Hospital Radio, Gunnislake Lights and Gunnislake Cricket Club. Applications to be a beneficiary are invited in January each year.
Every year the fete has many stalls of a huge variety, including local crafts, bric-a-brac and excellent local plant nurseries. There are also traditional stalls such as tombola, ‘splat the rat’ and guess the number of sweets in a jar, as well as stalls organised by local groups with face painting, coconut shy & activities for all ages. For your entertainment, there will be music from the Lady Margaret Fairground Organ, Taiko Drummers and traditional music from ‘The Rubber Band’. If all this activity works up an appetite, there will be an excellent tea tent, serving hot and cold drinks and cream teas, or for the hungrier among you, a barbecue serving hotdogs and burgers.
