INTRODUCTION
your Federation has moved forward on a broad
front. The year was a tough one as demand growth early in the year faded out and raw material shortages, inflationary cost increases and tight credit support from the banks together with worries about VOCs and REACH implementation increased the challenges for all members. During that time, the BCF has grown its membership numbers and continued to deliver a small surplus.
In 2010, the BCF set itself on a course to extend the range of services that it offers its members and, in the light of our experience, I believe this was the right thing to do. While not all the initiatives that were launched in 2010 met with total success, there were many aspects of the new services that the BCF provided that delivered value to the Membership.
The highlights of the year were: l Excess stock brokerage programme attracts interest l Annual Conference takes on fresh streamlined format
l REACH, SDS, Transport and Waste seminars are well attended
l The BCF Sustainability Committee continues to lead the Coatings Industry’s progress towards the achievement of our published policy and vision.
l Collaborative Nanotechnology seminar breaks new ground
l Awards Programme attracts many high quality entrants
l Decorative and Industrial Coating Councils are reinvigorated
l PR strategy clarified and increased exposure in trade media delivered
l Alliance with OCCA and improved working relationship with PRA
In line with feedback from the membership, the BCF will, in 2011, be building on the successes of 2010 while also addressing the changing priorities of members. We anticipate further challenges from regulators in both the EU and the UK across all sectors of the Coatings Industry which will need careful and constructive discussion and representation to both governments and the media.
The BCF will continue working with our Sector Skills Council, Proskills, to ensure that the Coatings Industry gains significant value from the UK Government’s commitment to the training and development of manufacturing apprentices.
We will also be launching our new web site which will make communication with both members and the wider market place a much easier and more informative process.
I would like to pay tribute to the BCF team in
Tony Mash, Chief Executive, British Coatings Federation
Chief Executive’s Report D
espite a market environment in 2010 which continued to test all members of the BCF, I am pleased to report that
Leatherhead and the wider group of consultants that supports the Federation for their loyalty and dedication in 2010. Their support and positive attitude to change in a difficult and challenging year has made the CEO’s role a very positive experience.
Finally, my thanks to outgoing President, Richard Chapman, who has given me excellent support and guidance over the past 2 years. His leadership on training has been particularly important to the Federation, and we look forward to continue working with him in the coming years as he continues his involvement with both the BCF and Proskills.
I wish all members great success in 2011.
