INDUSTRIAL COATINGS Industrial Coatings Industrial Coatings Sales

Sales of industrial coatings have improved in 2010 from the very depressed levels of the previous year but the recovery has been patchy. Good increases have been seen in the bellwether market of ‘all other industrial sales’ where litreage improved 6% in 2010 following a -16% fall in 2009 but elsewhere high performance coatings and marine have continued to struggle.

The unprecedented level of raw material price increases, combined with supply problems, was a major problem in the last year.

Industrial Coatings Council Chaired by John Boland, AkzoNobel Industrial Coatings

The Industrial Coatings sector serves a wide variety of applications with an extended range of products supported by varying chemistries and technologies. Despite the disparate nature of this sector, member companies share both a common interest in delivering protective and decorative coatings to the market place and ensuring compliance with the ever-changing UK’s regulatory environment. It is with these two drivers in mind that the Industrial Coatings

Council (ICC) was relaunched after a dormant spell of some seven years. The first meeting held in September of 2010 was well-attended and reflected, in particular, the growing concerns over stringent regulations observed in the UK and the, often, more lax legislative environment enjoyed by competitors outside Europe.

The issue of greatest concern to members was the upcoming roll-out of the REACH regulation which had the potential to undermine at least one significant application for protective coatings. Throughout the year, it looked as if many raw materials would not be registered for REACH
