At the time of going to print, figures for printing ink sales in the UK show the market stabilised in volume terms in 2010, after a 10% reduction in 2009.

There has been growing concern expressed within Europe about migration of additives which has been discussed at both Council level and at the Printing Ink Technical Committee. Close cooperation with the European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA) has en- sured that appropriate representations have been made both downstream to printing and packaging companies as well as to regulatory agencies across Europe.

The Council elected to give financial support to the ‘Two Sides’ initiative which brings together manufacturers of paper, ink, print and print machinery to deliver with one voice a marketing message to counter the current swing towards digital media.

a platform that emphasises the inherent environmental advantages of the printed word that re-stimulates demand for printing inks.
At the end of 2010, Paul Covell retired from his duties as facilitator of the BCF Printing Ink Council. Paul played a key role in keeping the Council on track to meet the demands of members over the past six years. Paul is a keen biker and yachtsman and his colleagues in the printing ink industry and everyone in the BCF who came into contact with him wish him a long and happy retirement.

The Printing Ink Council (PIC) is a very active group which brings together both manufacturers and suppliers of printing inks to the UK market. 2010 has been a significant challenge for the industry as a whole for not only has the recession impacted demand but the flight to digital media has also contributed a very challenging business environment.
The Council has taken on board inputs from BCF staff on a range of regulations stemming from European legislation on REACH, Safety Data
