WWII Mothers Inspire Latino Veterans Memorial
G
iving voice to our mothers is difficult,
and more so when they are not here to speak for themselves. This is the case in California where the memory and voices of WWII mothers are inspir- ing the public, business and political leaders to place at the state capitol in Sacramento, a memo- rial honoring Latino Veterans.
Supporters
of the project believe the memorial to be unique, because to their knowl- edge, this may be the first permanent memorial honoring Latino veterans at any of the nation’s 50 state capitols. Today’s Latina are
reaching heights and breaking barriers that previous generations of women could only dream or envision. Not too long ago, the role of Latinas was all but prescribed and set in stone, cultur- ally, economically and legally. All the while, we know that the voices of Latinas – our grandmoth- ers, mothers and aunts – were heard and respected by our families and local communities. They mat-
