JPL – Jet Propulsion Laboratory
and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), was held on March 1 and 2, 2011 at The Wes- tin LAX Hotel. The conference theme “Matching small businesses (including small disadvantage businesses and women-owned businesses) with large businesses (federal government and prime contractors) at a minimum cost to each, for the purpose of discussing purchasing/procure- ment opportunities.” The conference provided various “how-to” workshops

ranging in topics from small business programs, trends in small business subcontracting, and other topics related to supplier diversity. In addition to the workshops, the conference Marketplace provided an opportunity for business owners to network with prime contractors and government agencies. For more than 20 years, the Market- place has been instrumental in establishing strategic part- nerships with small and large businesses, and future cus- tomers. Described as a cost-effective networking tool, the Marketplace affords participants to market their products and services to a wide variety of prime contractors from across the nation. Functioning as the networking hub of the conference, this year’s Marketplace was populated with 80 exhibitors, and more than 200 representatives; including prime contractors, educational institutions, and government agencies throughout the nation— all of whom demonstrated commitment to assisting the small business representatives. The Laboratory is committed to featuring eloquent
and engaging keynote speakers who are selected for their contributions to small business, past performance records and history of working with NASA and other government agencies. Practical real-world experiences, passion and vision are invaluable keys to a successful speech. Year af- ter year, NASA/JPL is challenged to meet key standards set by previous speakers. This year, we had the privilege of featuring Richard “Rick” Keegan, Director of the Office of Program and Institutional Integration for NASA, as the Keynote Speaker for Tuesday, March 1. For Wednesday, March 2, the keynote speaker was JPL Project Scientist, Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), Dr. John Grotzinger. Ad- ditional guest speakers included Austin Beutner, First Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles, on Tuesday, March 1, and John Chiang, California State Controller on Wednesday, March 2.
