itness should be fun and affordable. It should not be boring, time-consuming or costly. Make your exercise routine a bit more exciting this year with some fitness activities you can do without an expensive gym membership. 1. Sports hoop your way to slimmer shape The thought of hula hoops probably conjures memories from your childhood, but the fact is hula hooping is a great fitness activity. Sports Hoops are large, weighted fitness hoops that adults use to tone and lose weight. These afford- able hoops are easy and fun to use, and can help you lose weight. If you’re a certified personal trainer looking for something new and exciting for your clients, consider attending a certified trainer program where you’ll learn the knowledge and tools to facilitate your own fitness hoop class and instruct personal training sessions. 2. Try a new activity you’ve never done before There’s no better way to get your blood pump- ing and your body moving than trying something you’ve never done before. Always wondered what it’s like to rock climb? Sign up for a class, or see if your local sports store has a free rock climbing wall. How about trying ice skating, surfing or even acrobatics? If a new activity is a little intimidating, you may not want to do it alone. Ask a friend to do it with you and you’re sure to get a great workout and a wonderful memory.

activities that burn calories and tone the body. Discover the parks and neighborhoods around you by planning regular walks. Consider finding a walk/run buddy to keep you motivated. Or, look online to find walking and running groups that plan regular outings and offer a supportive, team environment. 4. Join a sport Remember how much fun it was to play sports

growing up? Adult teams can be just as fun, providing great exercise and camaraderie. Does your work or church group have a softball team? Maybe your friends like to bowl and you could form a bowling team. From broom ball, tennis, golf and more, team sports keep the spirit of healthy, friendly competition alive. 5. Visit your library and request workout DVDs The library is a great community resource and it can also help keep you in shape. Because checking out books and DVDs is absolutely free, the library is the perfect place to research new types of exercise to spice up your normal routine. Try searching for Pilates, yoga and aerobic DVDs. You likely can request them to be sent to your preferred pickup location too. Some books and DVDs are geared toward specific age groups, so teens, adults and even seniors can find appropriate workout inspiration.

your window, waking you peacefully before your alarm clock goes off - there’s nothing quite like waking up, feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

According to a recent survey by Wakefield Research, 86 percent

of Americans say that when they start the day well, it positively af- fects the rest of their day. So what can you do to help ensure all your mornings begin great? You can start by thinking about what brings you joy and ways to incorporate these things into your morning routine.

Please your senses Even subtle things in our environment have a way of influencing our daily routine. Think about the aromas that promote good feelings in the morning. If the smell of fresh coffee helps you get out of bed, consider a programmable coffeemaker that will allow the scent of java to fill your home just as you wake up. For many, the smell of fresh clothes is an important part of feeling

good when getting ready to start the day. Choosing a laundry deter- gent and fabric softener with a long-lasting fragrance can help kick- start your morning and keep the positive feelings going well into your day. For example, Gain with FreshLock is designed to release its scent from fabrics the moment you get dressed—so you will get that great scent as you put on your clothes in the morning. Sounds can also help you start things off right. To get a jolt of

energy, create a power playlist that will help you conquer the morn- ing commute. Or, if it’s the calming sound of nature that puts you in

a good place, crack open a window so you can listen to the sound of nature while you get ready. Develop a morning

routine Pay special atten- tion to what makes you feel energized to take on the day and develop a morning routine around these things.

Start by training

your body to wake up at the same time each day. Grabbing a few extra minutes of sleep by hitting the snooze button may seem appealing at first but rising at the same time each day can actually help you get more rest and make for a better morning. If you are anxious about fitting everything into your morning routine, consider getting some of your chores out of the way before you go to bed. Packing your lunch at night may allow you to wake up stress free and take greater joy in other parts of your morning routine, from getting out of bed to getting dressed for the day. Everyone has their secrets for creating the perfect morning, and the important thing is to figure out what works best for you. world. Many countries and cultures choose to celebrate Mother’s Day in March, April or May. Though the Mother’s Day many people know today dates back a little more than a century, historians note that ancient Romans kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of the Gods. In addition, Europe has several traditions aimed at honoring mothers that date back quite a while. One of the traditions associated with the current Mother’s Day

is to give Mom a gift. Some people only give their own mothers and wives gifts, while others extend their generosity to sisters with children, mothers-in-law and even grandmothers. Chances are, over the years Mom’s gifts have run the gamut, from a homemade treasure kids made in elementary school to jewelry from hubby to breakfast in bed. For those who want to add a literary tilt to their Mother’s Day gift this year, consider including any of the following motherly quotes when preparing a gift Mom won’t soon forget. * “Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother.”

—Lin Yutang, Chinese writer * “I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always fol-

lowed me. They have clung to me all my life.”—Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States of America * “Youth fades; love droops; the leaves of friendship fall; A mother’s secret hope outlives them all.”—Oliver Wendell Holmes, American author * “A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest.”—Irish proverb * “All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That’s his.”—Oscar Wilde, Irish poet * “If I was damned of body and soul, I know whose prayers

would make me whole, Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine.”—Rud- yard Kipling, in his poem “Mother O’ Mine” * “The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which

you will always find forgiveness.”—Honore de Balzac, French playwright * “The future destiny of a child is always the work of the moth-

er.”—Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France * “The God to whom little boys say their prayers has a face very like their mothers’.”—James Matthew Barrie, Scottish author
