submitted by PHS Coach Don Mullen Pelham High School (PHS) hosted a track meet at the Harris
Family Track and Field Complex on Monday, May 3, also featuring Souhegan, Windham, and John Stark High Schools. For the first time in Pelham Track and Field history, the meet featured the competition of the pole vault event. “This meet was special for Pelham High School. We are so excited to finally have pole vault here. The pole vault is one of track and field’s greatest events. It requires great strength and athleticism. I am thrilled that John Bourk [a junior] tied for second in the competition. We have only had the pole vault pit and standards for a few days. The fact that Johnny cleared 9 feet was exciting for all of us,” said PHS Coach Don Mullen. The event was won by Alex Hodson of Souhegan, who cleared 11 feet. The pole vault pits were recently purchased used from the University of New Hampshire’s track and field program. “I really want to thank everyone at Pelham for making pole vault happen,” said Coach Mullen. “We received great support from the district office, our principal, AD, and the Pythons Booster Club. Pole vault pits are very expensive and I really appreciate the support I received to get this done. I really want to thank everyone associated with Pelham Athletics for getting this done. It means a lot to our track program and will help us hold more invitational meets going forward.”
On the boys’ side, Pelham finished second to Souhegan, defeating
Windham and John Stark. The Pelham girls finished a very close third, defeating Windham. “We were not at full strength for this meet, as we had many athletes who just returned from April vacation with their families,” said Coach Mullen. “I am really proud of our team effort. I am also very thankful to all the parents, teachers, and student volunteers who helped us run an efficient and effective meet. It takes over 25 volunteers to run a track meet. I am overwhelmed by the support of our kids and parents for this program. That really makes all the difference.”

Pole Vault Event Spruces Up PHS Track Meet
Boys’ Roundup Coach Mullen was extremely pleased with the progress made by
his athletes in the field portion of the meet. Josh Beauregard won the discus and placed third in the shot put. Tom Lynch (junior) placed second in the shot put and javelin. Brandon Hannon (sophomore) tied for first in the high jump and third in the triple jump. Captain John Bourk (junior) tied for second in the pole vault, placed second in the triple jump, and third in the long jump. Ryan Rheault (junior) placed fourth in the triple jump and Brian Ferullo placed fifth in the long jump. “The field events really made the difference for us in this meet. That is a sign that we are really becoming a track team. Points in the field really make or break a track team,” said Coach Mullen. On the track, Nathan Krawczyk (junior) placed fourth and sophomore Case Labonte placed fifth in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Brian O’Hearn placed third in the 3200-meter run and junior Dan Goes placed third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. The boys’ 4x400 team comprised of Labonte, Krawczyk, Hannon, and Rheault placed second. Girls’ Roundup Senior Captain Kelsi Lynde continues to set the tone for the team, with first-place victories in the 100 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles. She also anchored the 4x400 team to second place. Other members of the relay team were sophomore Kirsten Salois and freshmen Miranda Martin and Shannen Arseneault. Senior Captain Emily Long placed second in the 400-meter run. Kirsten Salois had her best high jump of the year and placed tied for third. Freshman Martin placed fourth in the 400-meter run and Arseneault placed fourth in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Erica Pantaleo placed second in the 3200-meter run. Coach Mullen assessed Lynde’s performance: “I am very excited with the progress Kelsi is making. She ran a very good time in the high hurdles today. She was a little bit off in her technical execution during the intermediate hurdles today, but with hard work in practice she can clear that up and her time should drop substantially.”

Pelham’s Kelsi Lynde runs away from the competition in winning the girls’ 100-meter hurdles
Python captain John Bourk cleared the bar at 9 feet at the newly acquired pole vault pit
In terms of the overall program, Mullen had this observation: “We
lack some depth—particularly on the girls’ side—but I am hoping that as more girls learn about track and field in Pelham, we can overcome this. Souhegan, who won the meet, brought nearly 100 participants. That is where we need to be in order to compete at a high level.”
