Leading by example

The Information Security Leaders event has come of age. What started in 2009 as a modest but ambitious roadshow in three UK cities has developed into an influential and professional industry event, now supported by the global resources of HP. Host Paul Fisher reports on the highlights of the 2011 series.

This year Information Security Leaders (ISL) visited Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol and London and the attendance at each venue was measurably higher than in previous years. Global events such as the WikiLeaks scandal and Stuxnet attacks in Iran may have conspired to raise the profile and business importance of information security but other trends such as consumerisation and cloud have clearly also contributed.

The calibre of the speakers at ISL goes a long way to attract delegates keen to learn form the industry leaders. This year ISL featured luminaries such as Paul Wood the CSO of Aviva (see Inform’s interview with Wood on page 13), Mark Brown, CISO at SAB Miller as well as Stephen Bonner, Managing Director, Barclays Information Risk Management. All three provided engaging and influential insight and thought leadership into melding security into the business processes of FTSE 100 companies.

The overall theme for ISL in 2011 was “transformation”. Most experts now

agree that for information security to develop it must transform itself and become an integral part of the business process and organisation. At the same time the global business environment has never been tougher. Recession, political upheaval and growing cyber attacks mean that information security professionals need to raise their game significantly. The 2011 events represented a major step forward in achieving that goal.

But what ISL also showed is that this is still a complicated and lengthy process that throws up as many arguments as it does solutions. However, what was also clear from speakers like Simon Shiu of HP Labs and David Pym, Head of the School of Natural and Computing Sciences, University of Aberdeen was that some very serious and smart people were actively researching and developing new models and processes to revolutionise the security management life cycle. It is hoped that such scientific models and theories will eventually find their way into security management products, possibly from HP itself.
