HIKING TRAILS D
SUMMER 2011 Get away from it all...without leaving town!
iamond Bar is home to several beautiful, back-country trails that offer hikers an escape from busy city life to relax and
experience nature close to home. Scattered throughout Diamond Bar in City parks and open space areas, the trails offer varying degrees of difficulty for casual nature strolls, moderate hikes and some to challenge even the experienced hiker. Remember, even though you’re only steps from the busy city, this is a natural area that is home to a variety of wildlife and natural features. Take proper precautions, wear appropriate clothing and let someone know where you’re heading.
Sycamore Canyon Park - .6 of a mile Trail head located on Diamond Bar Blvd at Clear Creek Canyon. Shaded by mature Oak and Sycamore trees, the trail provides a pleasant, easy walk along a gently flowing creek. During your hike, be sure to take a break and enjoy the beautiful
waterfall overlook deck.
Peterson Park Trail - .25 mile The trail climbs the slope on the east side of the park, using switch-backs that turn the 26% grade of the slope into a moderate hike. At the top of the hillside are benches to take a break and if you happen to be up there near sunset, you’ll see why it’s nicknamed the Sunset Vista Trail!
Pantera Park Trail .6 mile Catch this one from the undeveloped, east side of Pantera Park, east of the basketball courts and across the street from Pantera Elementary School. Be ready for a challenge with this trail, it goes up a steep slope with a grade of up to 29%. A hand-rail is available to help you get up this beginning section but you’re on your own the rest of the way. It’s a tough climb but there’s a big reward waiting for you at the top…some of the most beautiful vistas you’ll find anywhere in Diamond Bar.
Summitridge or Ridge Route Trail - approx. 1.5 miles It’s actually comprised of three connecting routes and provides the best loop trail opportunity in the city. This system has several options, ranging from 1.3 to 1.5 miles in length, and includes the Ridge Route and the Canyon Route.
Ridge Route access is up a steep slope that you can find at the end of the cul-de-sac on Clear Creek Canyon Drive at Steep Canyon Road. The top of the first slope offers spectacular views of the San Gabriel Valley. The trail continues east, descending to an access point at Wynnewood Drive, or continuing to climb to the east with slopes containing grades of up to 25%. A flat pad at the top of this slope offers an access point to Peak Court and awesome views of Tres Hermanos and the Arnold Reservoir. The trail then turns south where a fork in the road offers you a choice of two options…right heading west, leads to the Canyon Route; or left heading south, leads to Summitridge Park and the beautiful Diamond Bar Center.
The western end of the Canyon Route can also be accessed on the east side of the Dare Court cul-de-sac. The trail heads east from here and starts with a moderate climb up grades of 19%. The trail continues slightly up hill to the east until it starts rising dramatically to connect to the Ridge Route. Slopes at this point have some pretty steep grades of up to 29%
