SPOTLIGHT

There is such an individual stamp to creating something on your own. It’s coming from within. Yeah, it’s such a good way to explore your brain. Even be-

yond your brain…you don’t really know where things come from. It’s always interesting to try and uncover the mystery. You never know. I heard a part of one of your songs called “Sexy Super Mini Skirt” on your website. Is that the next hit on the block for you? I hope so.

I like it. That’s my favorite.

Your dance music is really fun and enjoyable. Plus, you had great suc- cess on the Billboard Dance Charts with your first two releases. You wrote both “V.I.P.” and “Baby Likes to Bang?” That’s correct.

For the song, “V.I.P.” was this your cynical look at the instant celebrity fusion that seems to be taking precedence today? Oh, absolutely, it’s totally cynical. Exactly, you just said it,

it’s that current fascination and obsession, which is not really new…it’s always happened. But, now it’s just a little bit out of control. “V.I.P.” is such an interesting song. It’s catchy and it makes you want to dance but the concept behind it is pretty serious. Let’s talk about fashion and how you present it. There is a Rainbow Brite or Hello Kitty-look to Katy Perry...and a sort of sci-fi high- fashion for Lady Gaga. What is your inspiration for the direction in how you present yourself in your latest videos? That’s something that I’m still trying to figure out! I like things that are very…that give me a sense of power. Being a woman, we feel so powerless in many ways; we have to act tough. Whatever we can do to try and represent that power that is more inside. Females are so powerful but we’re deceiving...and that can be even more dangerous. You don’t see us coming because we don’t look threatening…you know? The images that I like have some sort of power or are pow-

erful. That’s why I went for the military look for the album. The guns, uniforms and all the other things that guys like, they kind of represent the ultimate power in the world. The army and the military are the big guys’ toys…they’re just playing with the world. I’m just trying to capture those im- ages. Just for a reminder as to what people consider power. As a female, you don’t really see those images out there so much, in a real sense. That’s kind of the duality that I like. Your video for “Baby Likes to Bang” is off the hook with the Liquid Ds [two hot blonde women] who you help to rescue. Yeah…the Liquid Ds, those are my actual choreographers and back-up dancers. They’re amazing. It’s almost like you have an alter ego…serious songwriter by day and then you turn into this secret dance club spy at night. That’s right. A dance floor spy (laughter). Be careful!

SUMMER SIZZLE…ZAYRA STYLE

Are you a beach or poolside person? I come from the island of Puerto Rico…so, I’m totally beach; I’ve got to have the sand. The town I was born in is by the water.

What is your favorite season of the year? Spring. That’s when I’m the happiest… when I’m creating.

What is a favorite summer vacation retreat? Ahhh… the island of Culebra. It’s paradise. You have to go.

Chocolate, strawberry or vanilla ice cream? I think I’m gonna have to go with chocolate. I like them all! It’s whatever you put in front of me. Yeah.

What are some of your favorite summertime songs to jam to? The Beach Boys are always good for driving down the coastline. But, I’m think I’m more into The Bee Gees.
