WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME PARADE GRAND MARSHAL IN THE 21ST CENTURY Traditionally, a Grand Marshal holds a very high rank in a community. For those of you
who aren’t familiar with the name, rest assured that STEPHANIE MILLER has certainly earned her way into our intellectual little hearts—both in her frequent public debates with those of conservative persuasions and in her defense of liberal activism. The daughter of former U.S. Representative William E. Miller—Chairman of the Republican National Committee—has always stood firm in her beliefs…though her career path has branched everywhere from a theatre degree from the University of Southern California to movie acting, to performing at comedy clubs coast to coast, appearing as herself in productions like Show Me the Funny and the 2003 motion picture View From the Top. Most recently, Miller has shared her more memorable personality traits as comic/
commentator on prominent shows like ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Today Show, The Tonight Show, CNN’s Larry King Live, FOX’s The O’Reilly Factor, and HLN’s The Joy Behar Show. And you cannot miss her quick tongue in action on MSNBC’s The Ed Show! She has even braved the path outside the safety bubble and appeared on the Fox News program Hannity & Colmes. It seems, though, that she’s saved the best for last. Her current radio program, The Stephanie Miller Show, provides her millions
“This is not a partisan issue, it’s a human and civil rights issue.
You know Dick Cheney has a gay daughter, Newt Gingrich has a gay sister, Phyllis Schlafly has a gay son and Barry Goldwater has a gay grandson. This is about being able to look your loved one in the eye and say, ‘I love you but I don’t believe you deserve the same
rights that I have,’ and that’s why I did it [came out],” said Miller on The Ed Show
of pious listeners with a forum of political candor…and of course, her trademark humor. It is for all these reasons that Long Beach Pride is lucky to have Miller in at- tendance. For more information on Miller’s show and to subscribe to her podcast, visit
stephaniemiller.com. Grand Marshal Miller will be joined by Community Grand Marshals Cory Allen (Presi-
dent of the Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club and Male Young Democrat of the Year) and Tonya Martin (NAACP Woman of the Year Honoree and legislative analyst for Councilman Dee Andrews), as well as Lysa Gamboa-Levy who holds the title of Whitey Littlefield Bridge Builder and members of The Trevor Project—which was granted the honor of Morris Kight Political Grand Marshal.
WHAT IT TAKES TO ENCHANT A CROWD AT LONG BEACH PRIDE The other lovely lead on our radar is MONICA, that “Angel of Mine.” Similarly eager
to try multiple media for self expression, Monica Denise Brown has boomeranged into the world of film and TV with appearances on Living Single, the MTV film Love Song, Beverly Hills 90210, ATL, Felicity and American Dreams in which she portrayed Mary Wells. For promotion of her last album, Still Standing, Monica rode the reality TV wave with the short-but-sweet Monica: The Single on Peachtree TV. Even now, there
are rumors that Monica will play the lead in the 21st century remake of The Body- guard. (If Wentworth Miller plays her titular protector, I’m all over that!) Now that her marriage to NBA player Shannon Brown is as official as Prince William’s, our musical madam is ready to sing “The Boy Is Mine,” Get It Off,” “Don’t Take it Personal” and all of her other hits with titles that resemble the catty remarks we’re used to hearing on any given Saturday night. Having eagerly performed at Black Pride festivals in Atlanta and Washington D.C.,
Monica is certainly no stranger to our cause. ‘’I enjoy the atmosphere of pride weekend because the people are celebrating who they are,’’ the singer told Metro Weekly. ‘’That’s something that I’ve learned to do every day.’’ It’s an example we could all benefit from following, as self respect can sometimes lack in our community. But if the woman herself is any example, persistence and faith are indispensible for
success to occur. The sales of 23 singles from half a dozen albums don’t lie. And neither do the divulgers of her upcoming album’s release: New Life. Release date is as of yet unconfirmed, but perhaps our songbird will grace us with a preview of the approach- ing melodies.
