Move Like This The Cars Amazing as it may seem, the 2011 model is on the floor and ready for a test spin with the new CD from The Cars on May 17. It’s been over 20 years since Ric Ocasek was in the driver’s seat for the lead vocals. He returns with all of the original line-up with the noted exception of bassist and vocalist Benjamin Orr, who died in 2000. The mileage results on the odometer are in
and anyone who got their new wave/synth pop groove on to “Candy-O,” “Just What I Needed” or “Magic” will gladly perk their ears up with the new material. I hate to say it, but it’s almost one of those “I remember the days” moments… their first albums still remind me of being in my senior year of high school. I had a progressive teacher who played their music in art class when I was in 12th grade. Like they say, “If it ain’t broke…don’t fix it” and there are a lot of us who are glad that The Cars are off the showroom floor. Releasing May 10
Born This Way Lady Gaga
I feel so cheap and dirty…like a little monster, sort of. Lady
Gaga is hatching another egg on May 23—Oh, I mean CD! She has to go against the grain and release her second of- ficial CD on a MONDAY. Can’t she just play nice with the other kids or is it that she’s special? When even Dolly Parton is com- menting on our Lady of the Gaga, well…what can be said? Staring with remorse at my autographed copy of The Fame and listening to the country version of “Born This Way,” I’m excited about new material from the master of fame. “Judas” is the first single and as all good Catholic girls should know, he was Christ’s apostle who betrayed him. You express your- self, Ga…it’s sort of like a prayer for all of us “little monsters.” If you want to hear Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in a “before they were famous” interview, courtesy of “Moi,” in The Rage Monthly, go online at
ragemonthly.com (Sept 2009 issue) and discover she really is just your average hard- working lady from New York City. Releasing May23
(unless she changes her smoke signals)
Celluloid Activist The Life and Times of Vito Russo
For LGBT people of today, it is often the case that
looking back with respect to the forerunners of historical prominence in the fight for equal rights is sometimes lacking. In both the fights for gay rights and in bringing AIDS activism to national attention, Vito Russo is definitely one for the history books. He rightly gets his due for the first time in the important and well-researched biography by Michael Schiavi. Russo is not only noted for his passionate involvement in the GLAAD and ACT UP organizations, but also for his groundbreaking exploration of queer cinema as the author of The Celluloid Closet. Author Schiavi painstakingly and with a nuanced skill, covers
Russo’s life and brings a brilliant reflection of the time in which he lived. Personally losing his fight against AIDS at the age of 44, Russo blazed a brilliant trail of achievements in his short life. The book was written with the blessing and approval of his remaining family, and Celluloid Activist: The Life and Times of Vito Russo is an ex- emplary book. The biography offers a wealth of material of a historical context but also excels on a very human level of appreciation of the man himself. Available Now
Too Cool to Care The New Boyz May’s musical radar is tuning into The New Boyz’ sophomore re- lease set for May 17. This newer dynamic duo of hip-hop/rap caused an initial commotion two summers ago with their single, “You’re a Jerk.” This time around with the release of Too Cool to Care, it’s time to prove to the haters that they are not just a summer sensation. Two songs are flying around the airwaves right now. “Backseat” with its anthem of “There’s way too many suckers in the V.I.P.” (I totally agree)… sets the tone for one hopped-up ride. The other one hittin’ it like a Rubik’s Cube of twitters, texting and
rollercoaster
ride of rap is “I Don’t Care”
featuring Big Sean. These two artists
are through “jerkin’” us around and have upped their game for
Too Cool to Care. Releasing May 17
