A-LISTS community by randy hope
PRIDE VOLUNTEER SEASON KICKS-OFF San Diego LGBT Pride is looking for
a few (hundred) good volunteers in preparation the upcoming 2011 Pride Celebration in July. This year Pride will host a series of volunteer fairs to give interested community members who want to volunteer, an opportunity to personally meet and interact with department managers and coordinators. The next
volunteer fair is Tuesday, May 3, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Here volunteers
and potential volunteers can ask questions and pre-register before San Diego Pride volunteer registration opens to the general public on Thursday, May 5. The volunteer fairs take place at The Center’s auditorium located at 3909 Centre Street. Reserve your spot by contacting Cathy Hemphill at
volunteeradmin@sdpride.org. Refreshments will be served.
SAN DIEGO SISTERS DOOLEY CHAMPAGNE & CUPCAKE RECEPTION St. Paul’s Foundation and San Diego Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are joining
forces to host a Champagne and cupcake reception. The pre-show event will be held at Diversionary Theatre on Saturday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m. Following the reception Dooley will be staged at 8 p.m. Based in 1954 Dooley tells the remark- able factual story of humanitarian Dr. Tom Dooley, whose career was derailed by the threat of exposure of his sexuality long before “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” The charismatic young gay Navy officer, finds his life’s work in the stark reality of the Cold War and the refugee camps of Southeast Asia. With rich theatrical magic this cross-cultural epic transports us to a world as complex and contradictory as the man himself—torn between fear and idealism, selfishness and self-denial, hypocrisy and valor, crassness and mysticism. The pre-show Champagne and cupcake reception is free, while tickets to the Saturday performance of Dooley run $33, purchasable at
diversionary.org. Diversionary Theatre is located at 4545 Park Boulevard in University Heights. For more information, contact Novice Sister Atta Van Haldol at

IPLAY4CHARITY: A CHARITY EXPERIENCE Think it’s impossible to donate to charity and have fun at the same time? Then join in
iplay4charity—a monthly social game night presented by The Pride Card and hosted at Dave and Buster’s—and experience change. Participants who take part in iplay4char- ity the second Wednesday of every month, simply play games by spending whatever amount of money they choose and donate the tickets earned to provide toys for local charities that provide services for underprivileged children—specifically Family Mat- ters and Toys for Tots. Last year’s total for the monthly event donated more than 1,000 toys, while donations to Family Matters exceeded $500. The person who donates the most points for each experience will receive a prize from one of the participating Pride Card businesses. Look for Charity Experience Coordinators Daniel and Bo, at the next iplay4charity event on Wednesday, May 11, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dave and Buster’s is located at 2931 Camino del Rio North in Mission Valley. WOMEN’S FEST GOES “D.I.Y.” Don’t miss “Women’s Fest 2011: Do It Yourself (D.I.Y.)!” The day-long festival of workshops,
entertainment and resources for LBT women will focus on the D.I.Y. movement. Featured workshops include creative writing, wine-making, auto-repair basics, breast health self-care and D.I.Y. sexual health to name a few. There will also be a lively vendor area with music, en- tertainment and items geared toward LBT women and their allies. Women’s Fest takes place Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The San Diego LGBT Community Center, 3909 Centre Street in Hillcrest. For more information, contact Abby Schwartz at 619.692.2077, ext. 212 or
