LET THE RACES
AND THEY’RE OFF— Pride season begins with one of my favorites,
CONTRIBUTING WRITERS
Long Beach Pride—great fun, a great location and one of the most diverse Pride celebrations out there. I always find it such a shock that it has arrived and that we are looking at the beginnings of summer season and the fun that it brings. To that end, make sure that you check out our feature on “Manscaping” on pages 58 and 59 for those invalu- able self care tips as you begin the summer. And by the way, nobody wants to see those unsightly, errant hairs—only you should know where the offenders are! Let the bikini waxing begin (too bad there aren’t sound effects in print—OUCH)! I wonder if the goddess Aphrodite had to worry about such things.
wonders of any of her scapes, but read pages 34-36 and you will get an intimate look at Kylie Minogue’s likes, dislikes and hopes for her new tour that finally makes it to the U.S. shores this summer! History is a wonderful thing, when we use it and heed its lessons. Harvey Milk taught us that fighting for
what we believe in is vital to our survival. The Harvey Milk Diversity Celebration is a commemoration to mark one of our heroes on pages 14 and 15 who went before us. Another milestone to ponder this month is the battle over AIDS as it hits the 30-year mark. For myself, it is difficult to believe that the disease that shaped so much of my early gay living began so long ago. Forever a part of my experience is the inexpressible sorrow and fear that crept into my days as acquaintances and friends left my life in horrifying numbers. It is difficult to express the shock and fear I experience when I found my last-encounter-of-the-un-safe-kind’s AIDS quilt square (two short months after said encounter occurred) on the stadium floor in Minneapolis back in 1986 and its effect in my life. We adapt, we move forward, but hopefully we never forget—I know I haven’t. We evolved as a group, banded together to collectively fight for our right to exist, and we learned that
together we could affect change on a large scale. We have come a very, very long way—yet there is still more work to do as we stand up for those who are isolated and in need of support. As Harvey Milk said, “there is hope for a better tomorrow.” Celebrate life, my friends, it is precious, but never forget where you came from or those who made it possible for you to get there!
