MEET: Gillian Lee Smith by Anna Ryan ofwww.funkydivadesigns.com

It’s always inspiring to meet a multi-talented artists/designer- maker who is able to turn their hand to practically anything they desire. We caught up with just such an artist/ designer-maker, Gillian Lee Smith, to find out about what inspires her work.

What do you do and how did you start? After studying Performance Costume at Edinburgh College of Art I wanted to work for myself, in my own space and almost recreate the studio environment that was my experience of Art College. There you have the freedom to develop your own ideas, despite often working to a brief, you are able to interpret it completely in your own way.

After graduating I attended a couple

of business courses, one geared towards setting up general business and one purely for the creative industries. At this point my business idea was purely based on designing and making costumes but over time I realised that I could actually return to my first love which was painting and illustrating. These courses were invaluable in enabling me to see that just applying paint to paper would not be enough to feed me and keep a roof over my head! I needed to develop a multi-faceted working life and, over the years, I have worked hard to develop opportunities to do what I love.

I work in my studio, painting, making textile characters, adornments and whatever springs from my imagination. I exhibit my work regularly in galleries and exhibitions
