REVIEW: Inspirational Books


Inspiration can come from almost anything, anyone or anywhere. Perhaps there is a special someone that inspires you, or a place, event or book; the sources of inspiration are seemingly endless!


Here, some of the UK Handmade team share a little bit about the books that inspire them in life, creative pursuits and as people.


Mich Yasue: Writer The Gentle Art of Domesticity (Hodder & Stoughton 2007) is not a “how to” craft book but a series of Jane Brocket’s musings on the pleasures and joys of knitting, crochet, baking, stitching, quilting, gardening and homemaking.


Well written, wide ranging and beautifully illustrated, it celebrates creativity within the home, paying tribute to the inspiration to be found in these gentle arts and providing inspiration of its own through the author’s creations and reviews of pictorial, literary and film evocations of domesticity. A lovely book to dip into and browse.


Jo Askey: Designer The life of Pi’ by Yann Martell is particularly inspiring because apart from being an incredibly well written ‘page-turner’ of a story, it reminds us that ultimately in life, we choose what we believe in.
