SCENE: Get Involved With

British Craft & Design by Jo Whitehead of glassprimitif

Paul and Angie Boyer have been championing and inspiring designer- makers for many years through their magazine, Craft & Design, and their sponsorship of British Craftspeople.

I first subscribed to their magazine The Craftsman, as it was originally known, in the early 1980s when it was a far cry from the glossy publication it is today. I’ve seen this magazine both evolve and reflect the emerging craft scene, keeping the interest in “hand made” alive even when it was unfashionable to buy crafts in favour of mass produced and shop-bought.

This year sees the launch of their new initiative to promote makers and artisans with British Craft and Design Month, scheduled for May 2011. This is an opportunity for everyone

involved in the craft industry to come together to promote events, share resources and attract new business. The website, http://www. craftanddesignmonth.net/ is just the start. Here’s what they have to say about this new project.

“Over the last two or three decades the media have been bemoaning the fact that manufacturing in the UK has disappeared. This is because they look at the economy as large companies which are no longer able to compete in a global context and totally miss this underlying economy. There are many thousands of craftsmen and women who manufacture and sell their products in the UK and to the overseas markets who are completely overlooked in the scale of things.”

“Some years ago the Crafts Council published a report that suggested that £600m was contributed to the UK economy from craft makers. This figure will have increased significantly over the intervening period.

Craft and Design Month will try to change peoples’ attitudes and the assumption that hand made products are somehow sub-standard, rather that they are unique pieces which may well become the ‘Antiques Road Show’ ¬finds of the future.”

What can we do, collectively, to contribute to this brave initiative to rally the handmade movement? Well the website is a free publicity tool for all our craft events during May 2011, an opportunity for us to educate
