Dales Way Relay … continued 9
… to Grassington At Kettlewell, Rebecca Mon-Williams, Fiona
Schneider and Simon Darley were assembled near the handover. Last minute preparations were curtailed by the rapid arrival of the previous group and they had to sprint to the bridge to take the handover for this challenging leg which veers away from the valley bottom.

… to Burnsall Andrew Merrick and Jim Towers were already waiting at Grassington and were then joined by Andy Wiggans. Lyn Eden had sneaked off ahead. Lyn and Jim had raced earlier in the day where Jim had won a Christmas pudding in the postponed Jolly Holly 10k. On learning of the recent race times of Andrew and Andy, Jim decided to give himself a head start too. It wasn’t long before Simon, Rebecca and Fiona appeared after working hard to make up some of the time lost on earlier legs. Rebecca continued on with Andrew and Andy and with perfect timing, Mark Mon-Williams arrived from the opposite direction, having run in from the next handover to join the group.

… to Barden Bridge Moving on to Burnsall, Andrew Bennett was
amused at Sue Verspyck’s relief that I wasn’t running with this next group whilst being unaware of the individuals who were already hurtling along the Dales Way towards her with the intention of joining in with this next leg. Lyn, Jim and the fast- footed four paused for photos with Sue V, Sue Williamson and Helen Thurston before we watched them being swept across the fields for all of three seconds until they too were out of sight.

… to Bolton Abbey At Barden Bridge I decided it was time to stretch my legs again and to enjoy a run with some more Harriers on their first
introduction to the DWR. Mike Picken, Claire Macina and Rebecca Moores waited patiently before deciding a little-head start would benefit them too. For the group arriving, several legs merged into one as they continued with the relay as a taper for the London Marathon or to increase mileage for the Three Peaks. The whole group, fast and steady, reunited at the Cavendish Pavilion and made good progress to the final handover.

… to Ilkley At Bolton Abbey, Sue and Helen were replaced by
the fresh legs of Andrew Jackson for the concluding section to Ilkley which was completed in the last hour of daylight, the final group arriving at the Old Bridge to be met by runners and supporters and from earlier in the day, many of whom then enjoyed well deserved liquid refreshment at the Ilkley Moor! It was also a relief that everything had gone largely to plan.
Thank you to everyone who took part and to the DWR’s own Tony Warren, Alison Weston who had the original idea and plan. And what of the pebble? Having acquired some sentimental value we hadn’t the heart to hurl it into the swirling waters of the Wharfe so it is currently adapting to its new surroundings and hopefully will have been available for inspection and verification by the time you read this!
