DISCUSSION Evening Gatherings past and future
AS THE LAST of the seasonal gatherings has come to pass let’s take a moment to look through the rear view mirror and reflect on the merits of the evening. They appear to be well received, some subjects perhaps more appealing than others.
The question when hosting such things is whether to make the subject generic and appeal to the masses or more specific, only appealing to a subset of members. It’s a tricky balance and one that can vary as types of events (and members)

come and go, for instance the interest in marathons varies over the years or as a more recent example the active interest in the Bob Graham Round. Another element is the varied approaches to any given event, the type and volume of training, expectations people set themselves, endeavour, application and so on. One of benefit of the sessions is to share this information and gain a perspective from people new to the sport, ageing veterans, coiled-springed-ready- to- leap-into–action seniors and any other sporadic bushy tailed enthusiasts who care not to view life through categories.

ILKLEY HARRIERS NEWSLETTER • APRIL–JUNE 2010
Assuming the will of the people dictates, the sessions will continue from September 2011; let’s take a look through the windscreen at what’s ahead. September’s opening session is currently on the merits of venturing out with a head torch on a dark evening over uncharted terrain (uncharted in the dark that is). We’ll be approaching dark nights by then – oh, perish the thought. We could also cover specific
road race training, coordinating group runs, suggested club sessions. For example what’s
the best hill in Ilkley to do hill reps on with a group of varying ability and how do you fit in equal rest equal effort within the group? One answer is to pick a decent hill, say conker hill, run up and down it for 25 minutes and if you pass someone or get passed you have to put in a 5 second burst. I’m not precious about the gatherings and would embrace additional input, perhaps someone is so passionate that they feel the need to host their own specialist subject as a one-off or suggest any subject or a different approach. A fresh pair of eyes would be more than welcome. Ewan Welsh
Clear Gig Alert
Followers of Club rock gods Nigel Tapper and Charles Oxtoby will be interested to know that their band Clear is set to rock the Hollygarth on Leeds Road on Friday 15 April, doors 7.30pm, £5. Get along for a good sociable workout where you don’t all point the same way, flex those metatarsals to a different rhythm and swap the isotonics for a very reasonable pint of the brown stuff.
