Volunteers of the Month January – John Burrows

John is a Level 2 coach and Sally Malir’s dad. In his youth he competed in the Decathlon so has an all round knowledge of most athletics events. John’s specialism is throwing (in particular discus) which is brilliant because none of us like throwing events very much. He has coached the junior section for the past 3 years starting with the general 11 to 15 year group on a Monday but now concentrates on the Tuesday throws group at Ghyll Royd. He attends the coach development sessions in Sheffield and Leeds and his experience and expertise has made a big difference.

February – Alison Bennett Alison is a Level 1 coach and has coached the juniors since we first started at

ILKLEY HARRIERS NEWSLETTER • APRIL–JUNE 2010

Clevedon, so this is definitely a long service award! Over the years she has had great involvement with the juniors and much of what we do now is due to Alison’s input. She is currently coaching Sportshall Athletics to the 11–15 group on a Monday but also helps at every event that we organise and has taken charge of XC teams.

March – Dwayne Heard

Dwayne is a Level 1 coach who started with us 3 or 4 years ago on a Thursday night with the 8–10 Sportshall Athletics group. He now coaches long and triple jump to the jumps group on a Tuesday at Ghyll Royd School. Dwayne is an ex-international junior triple jumper and his claim to fame is that he once beat Jonathon Edwards. Over the past couple of years we have seen a marked improvement in the standard of our long jumpers due to Dwayne’s work.

Coach development sessions At the end of January Ilkley we organised a Sportscoach UK course at the Tennis Club called ‘FUNdamentals of Movement’. Eleven coaches and helpers from the junior section attended – John Burrows, Sue Williamson, Sally Judkowski, Beth Pugh, Rebecca Mon-Williams, Sally Malir, Margaret Sykes, Angela Bretherick, Rachel Websdale, Alison Bennett and Shirley Wood. The course was very useful at all levels of coaching and we hope to do more. In March and April the Bradford

Athletics Network organised two coach development sessions at the John Charles Athletics Centre in Leeds. Five activities were coached by top level coaches from the region – sprint hurdles, high jump, shot/discus, middle distance running and pole vault. A special mention to Sue Williamson and Clare Smith who took part in everything and are now our expert pole vault coaches! As a spin-off,14 of our athletes were also selected to receive high level coaching.
